Dow slides on home sales dip; markets await Fed meeting

stocks

Stocks kicked off the week on a weak note as investors hesitated to jump in ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting and a series of key economic reports.

(Read more: 'Rally has gone too far,' Citi strategist says)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 36 points lower, dragged by Bank of America and Hewlett-Packard, after squeezing out its fifth-consecutive weekly rally last week.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also closed lower. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, rose above 13.

Still, the S&P 500 remains on pace for its best monthly gain since October 2011.

Among key S&P Sectors, energy and financials led the laggards, while telecoms gained.

On the economic front, pending home sales dipped 0.4 percent in June, according to the National Association of Realtors, pulling back from a six-year high in the previous month.

About one-fifth of the S&P 500 companies report earnings in the coming week. About half of the S&P 500 has reported earnings so far, with 68 percent beating earnings estimates, and 56 percent topping revenue forecasts, according to data from Thomson Reuters.

However, market attention will mostly be on the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting, which starts on Tuesday and may give an indication of when the central bank's massive asset purchase program will be tailed back. The Bank of England and the European Central Bank will also meet this week.

"All of them are expected to touch on the subject of forward guidance, albeit to various extents," Credit Agricole analysts wrote in a research note. "The clarity of the symphony will determine the level of support to the risk appetite. Should any of them be more explicit (more dovish) about forward guidance, the market can be expected to react in a positive way."

(Read more:Changes to Fed 'forward guidance' could lead to this)

The gross domestic product for the second quarter will be reported on Wednesday and the key payrolls report on Friday.

Meanwhile, Asian equity markets declined across the board as renewed fears of an economic slowdown in China hindered gains. Japanese stocks fell to a new four-week low on the back of the strengthening yen. The dollar-yen hit a new one-month low of 97.61 leading to a sell-off across the export-heavy Nikkei index.

Why Can't Luggage For Adults Be As Wonderful As This Robo-Bag?

Why Can't Luggage For Adults Be As Wonderful As This Robo-Bag?

There's an unwritten rule that luggage for adults has to have a fairly mundane and boring design. But when you're waiting at the luggage carousel and realize that everyone else had the same idea to buy a red suitcase to stand out, you realize there has to be a better way. And there is, it's just too bad the $40 Luggo here is only big enough to store a child's wardrobe.

Ernie Els gives back his claret jug at Muirfield

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) ? Two dozen cameras were in position Monday morning to capture the first big moment of this British Open, only they weren't anywhere near the golf course. They waited in the driveway as a silver station wagon pulled through the gate and stopped in front of the clubhouse at Muirfield.

Ernie Els climbed out of the back seat holding the shiny claret jug he won last year at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, and he promptly handed it over to Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson.

"Thank you," Dawson told him. "You've been a great champion."

Now it's up to the 43-year-old South African to reclaim the silver prize, and that doesn't figure to be easy.

Els won last month in Germany. He won the last time the Open was played at Muirfield in 2002. He has more top 10s in the British Open than any other major. But he has this piece of history working against him ? the last major champion in his 40s to successfully defend his title was Old Tom Morris, and that was 151 years ago.

The Big Easy is not a betting man, but he was asked to pick someone to wager a pound on at Muirfield.

"I'd have to look at the odds, wouldn't I?" he said, trying to buy time. "Maybe a long shot. I like to go for the long shots."

That's what he might have been considered last year at Royal Lytham. He was winless on a major tour in two years, failed to qualify for the Masters for the first time in nearly two decades and was No. 40 in the world. But he was close to flawless on the back nine and was the recipient of a shocking collapse by Adam Scott, who made bogey on his last four holes to finish one shot behind.

Back to the wager. He was asked who should be considered in the pole position.

"To name one, I'm going to have to name 20," Els said. "That's how close it is. I don't know. A guy who likes the layout. A guy who likes the bounces. I'm not sure."

That was a good start.

There is nothing like links golf, with its humps and mounds along the fairways, a landscape framed by tall grass and dotted with pot bunkers. It can be played in the air when the grass is green during wet summers, or played on the ground when the course is crusty and yellow, which is the case this year at Muirfield.

Els remembers his first experience with links golf, and he loved it right away.

"The sound is different. The divot into the fairways are different. The whole experience is different than anything else around the world," Els said. "So it's something you're either going to really like or you're not going to like. I was fortunate enough that I really fell in love with it."

A long shot?

Maybe someone like Jordan Spieth, the 19-year-old Texan who was headed toward another top finish on the PGA Tour until he holed a bunker shot for birdie on the last hole at the John Deere Classic, got into a playoff when Zach Johnson made bogey on the 18th, and won on the fifth extra hole. Next thing he knew, Spieth was on a charter flight to Scotland for his first British Open. He has experience with links golf, having played the Walker Cup at Royal Aberdeen in 2011.

And for those who believe experience is required, Ben Curtis won in 2003 in his first major championship, let alone his first time playing links golf. Curtis reunited this week with Andy Sutton, the local caddie he hired at Royal St. George's. Sutton was told of an American player looking for a caddie 10 years ago and had never heard of Curtis. Not to worry. A lot of Americans had never heard of him, either.

Tiger Woods is always a favorite, and he has the best odds this week, even though he hasn't won the claret jug since Hoylake in 2006.

Els is well aware of the quality of champions Muirfield tends to produce, from Harry Vardon and James Braid to Walter Hagen and Henry Cotton, from Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player to Lee Trevino and Tom Watson, along with Nick Faldo and Els.

And yes, he believes the course has something to do with that.

"It's just a wonderful design," Els said. "The par 3s are unbelievable. The par 5s have been changed a little bit ? they're longer. Each and every hole is a little bit different. There's left-to-right, right-to-left, and it all happens out there. Every links shot that you can imagine, you're going to play it this week."

Els returned to Muirfield a few weeks ago, and he played a quiet nine holes Sunday evening. He remembers much about Muirfield, a course where he tied for fifth in his professional debut in 1992 and won a decade later. And there are some shots he is trying to forget, such as the double bogey on the 16th hole that nearly cost him a chance at having his name on that claret jug.

Els had to make birdie on the par-5 17th and close with a par just to get into a four-man playoff over four holes, and he won in the first sudden-death moment in Open history over Thomas Levet on the fifth hole. Even then, Els hit into a bunker on the 18th and had to save par for the win.

He certainly is not ruling himself out this week, not after the victory in Germany and his tie for fourth in the U.S. Open. Els might not win as much as he used to, but he plays the hard courses well. And with a forecast for dry weather and strong wind, this might be hard.

The claret jug is the oldest trophy in golf, first awarded in 1873. Els took it around the world over the last year, as he did after winning in 2002. The jug stayed outside London the last two weeks, cleaned and buffed so it was shiny when he handed it back to the R&A.

Golf tournament benefits Palliative Care, Green Wood

The Northumberland Charity Golf Tournament organized by the Port Hope Knights of Columbus saw 75 golfers brave plenty of rain to finish their 18 holes at Ashbrooke Golf Course on June 22. During the event a hockey jersey donated by Shane O'Brien of the Colorado Avalanche was raffled off. The tournament raised $7,200 to be split evenly between the Northumberland Hills Hospital Palliative Care Unit and the Green Wood Coalition. This was the second annual fundraising tournament hosted by the K of C. Last year's raised $7,000 for the window restoration project of Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church in Port Hope. Dr. Valentin Fuster honored for his lifelong contributions for the prevention of heart disease

The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) has honored Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director of Mount Sinai Heart at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, with the 2013 SCCT Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award at its SCCT Annual Scientific Meeting in Montral, Canada, on July 12.

The award, designed to promote the prevention of death from heart disease, recognizes individuals whose pioneering efforts have saved lives from a leading killer throughout the world, coronary artery disease. SCCT recognizes Dr. Fuster for his lifelong contributions to achieve disease prevention in the field of cardiology, in particular for his monumental work in unraveling the molecular and cellular bases for atherosclerosis development, providing a foundation for developing diagnostic and treatment approaches.

"I feel very proud to receive this award that wears the name of Dr. Arthur S. Agatston," says Dr. Fuster, who also serves as Physician-in-Chief, Director of the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute and the Marie-Jose and Henry R. Kravis Center for Cardiovascular Health at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. "Dr. Agatston was one of the first who had the vision to link a diagnostic tool (coronary calcification), with its use, to encourage prevention (Agatston Score). He is a visionary."

Dr. Agatston, is a pioneer in the field of noninvasive cardiac imaging and a leading preventive cardiologist. His scientific work, first reported in 1991 with Dr. Warren Janowitz, resulted in the Agatston Score, a method for screening patients for coronary artery disease by measuring the amount of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries. The Agatston Score is currently used throughout the world and considered by many experts to be the single best predictor of future heart attack. To help his cardiac and diabetes patients improve their blood chemistries and lose weight, Agatston also developed a diet, which led to his first book, The South Beach Diet. Currently, Dr. Agatston serves as the Medical Director of Wellness and Prevention at Baptist Health South Florida.

"Dr. Fuster is a true gentleman and a scholar," says Dr. Arthur Agatston, the preventive cardiologist for whom the SCCT award is named and who presented the award to Dr. Fuster. "His ability to pioneer cutting edge research and then communicate it in a clear, concise and exciting manner is unparalleled in the field of cardiology. It is a great honor for me and for the SCCT to have Dr. Valentin Fuster accept our cardiovascular disease prevention award."

As a world-renowned cardiologist, Dr. Fuster has served with distinction in numerous leadership capacities in the cardiovascular community throughout the globe, including past President of the American Heart Association, past President of the World Heart Federation, member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, former member of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Advisory Council, and former Chairman of the Fellowship Training Directors Program of the American College of Cardiology.

In addition, Dr. Fuster has published more than 900 scientific articles on the subjects of coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis and thrombosis, and is the lead editor of two major textbooks on cardiology, "The Heart" (previously edited by Dr. J. Willis Hurst) and "Atherothrombosis and Coronary Artery Disease" (with Dr. Eric Topol and Dr. Elizabeth Nabel).

Past recipients of the SCCT Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award include: William P. Castelli, MD, of The Heart Center of MetroWest in Framingham, MA; Scott M. Grundy, PhD, MD, of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX; and Sanjay Gupta, MD, Neurosurgeon, Author, and CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent.

Lac Megantic Oil Train Explosion: Consequences of Deregulation

This is a guest post by Phil Mattera.

Canada?s Transportation Safety Board is far from reaching a conclusion on what caused an unattended train with 72 tanker cars filled with crude oil to roll downhill and crash into the Quebec town of Lac-Megantic, setting off a huge explosion that killed at least 15 people. But that hasn?t stopped Edward Burkhardt, the chief executive of the railroad, from pointing the finger at everyone in sight ? except himself.

Burkhardt first tried to blame local firefighters who had extinguished a small blaze in the train before the larger accident, and now he is accusing his own employee ? the person who was operating the train all by himself ? for failing to apply all the hand brakes when he parked the train for the night and went to a hotel for some rest after his 12-hour shift.

Whatever were the immediate causes of the accident, Burkhardt and his company ? Montreal, Maine & Atlantic (MMA) Railway and its parent Rail World Inc. ? bear much of the responsibility.

Burkhardt is a living symbol of the pitfalls of deregulation, deunionization, privatization and the other features of laissez-faire capitalism. He first made his mark in the late 1980s, when his Wisconsin Central Railroad took advantage of federal railroad deregulation, via the 1980 Staggers Rail Act, to purchase 2,700 miles of track from the Soo Line and remake it into a supposedly dynamic and efficient carrier. That efficiency came largely from operating non-union and thus eliminating work rules that had promoted safety.

Wisconsin Central ? which also took advantage of privatization to acquire rail operations in countries such as Britain, Australia and New Zealand ? racked up a?questionable safety record. Burkhardt was forced out of Wisconsin Central in a boardroom dispute in 2001, but he continued his risky practices after his new company, Rail World, took over the Bangor and Aroostook line in 2003 and renamed it MMA.

Faced with operating losses, Burkhardt and his colleague Robert Grindrod targeted labor costs with little concern about the safety consequences. In 2010 the?Bangor Daily News?reported?that MMA was planning to reduce its crews to one person in Maine, which, amazingly, was allowed by state officials. Grindrod blithely told the newspaper: ?Obviously, if you are running two men on a crew and switch to one man, you?re saving 50 percent of your labor component.? The company also succeeded in getting permission for one-man crews in Canada.

Inadequate staffing may have also played a role in a 2009 incident at an MMA maintenance facility in Maine in which more than 100,000 gallons of oil were spilled during a transfer in the facility?s boiler room. In 2011 the EPA?fined?the company $30,000 for Clean Water Act violations.

MMA continued to have safety problems even before the Lac-Megantic disaster. The?Wall Street Journal?reported?that MMA had 23 accidents, injuries or other reportable mishaps from 2010 to 2012 and that on a per-mile basis the company?s rate was much higher than the U.S. national average.

The Lac-Megantic accident is prompting calls in Canada for a reconsideration of the policy of allowing a high degree of self-regulation on the part of the railroads. A review of lax regulation, including the elimination of work rules, should also occur in the United States. There?s also a scandal in the fact that railroads like MMA are still?allowed?to use outdated and unsafe tanker cars.

Yet some observers are seeking to exploit the deaths in Quebec by making the bizarre argument that the real lesson of the accident is the need to rely more on pipelines rather than railroads to carry the crude oil gushing out of the North Dakota Bakken fields (the content of the MMA tankers) and the tar sands of Canada. North Dakota Senator John Hoeven, for instance, is?using?the incident to argue the need for the controversial XL Pipeline.

How quickly these people forget that the safety record of pipelines is far from unblemished. Hoeven?s neighbors in Montana are still recovering from the 2011 rupture of an Exxon Mobil pipeline that spilled some 40,000 gallons of crude oil into the Yellowstone River.

The problem is not the particular delivery system by which hazardous substances are transported but the fact that too many of those systems are under the control of executives such as Burkhardt who put their profits before the safety of the public.

Moyes says injured Rooney going nowhere

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:23 a.m. ET July 12, 2013

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Manchester United manager David Moyes says Wayne Rooney injured his hamstring before the club's preseason tour to Asia and Australia and dismissed suggestions the striker is set to leave the club.

Rooney returned home after only one day in Thailand and is expected to be out of action for a month, placing him in doubt for United's first match of the Premier League season against Swansea on Aug. 17.

"The day we left (Manchester for the tour) he just felt his hamstring tighten up right at the end of training and we thought there would be no problem," Moyes said. "But after the long flight we decided we'd get him tested and scanned and have a look at things, and there is just a small grade one injury there.

"We won't take any chances - there is no point in taking him any further round the world, so we've sent him back and he'll get treatment."

Rooney wrote on his Facebook page: "Gutted to have picked up a niggling injury especially as training was going so well, heading back to Manchester to have it assessed fully but early indications are nothing to worry about."

The early return provoked further speculation about Rooney's future.

Previous United manager Alex Ferguson revealed Rooney asked to leave the club at the end of last season, while Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said Friday that the 27-year-old England international is a player he admires.

"People are entitled to talk about good players," Moyes said. "I am being asked plenty about Wayne, so I am sure Jose will be getting asked about lots of players as well.

"It is hard to keep repeating myself but I will do. Wayne is a Manchester United player and will remain that."

LEGION BASEBALL: Plymouth has shot at top spot in Zone 10

The Plymouth Post 40 Legion baseball team barely snuck into the Zone 10 playoffs last season, winning a tie-breaker with Kingston to grab the eighth and final playoff spot. Things are going to be a great deal easier for both teams this time around as they speed into the final week of the regular season on a winning streak.

Plymouth improved to 11-5 Wednesday night with a solid 7-3 win at Whitman. With six games left on the schedule Plymouth is in a log jam for second place in Zone 10 behind defending champion Barnstable. Barnstable has a couple games lead on Kingston, Plymouth, Brockton and Orleans at the moment as the teams get ready for the final week of the regular season.

Plymouth starter Alex Rozak didn't get much support Wednesday night from a defense that made six errors behind him, but he didn't need much, either. After surrendering a pair of hits in the first inning, the Plymouth North and Mass. Maritime Academy product shut Whitman down over the next four innings and let his offense put the game away.

Rozak struck out five in five innings of work. Mark Mineo closed things out, allowing one hit and striking out three over the final two innings of the contest. Rozak and Mineo did the job at the plate, as well. Both had a pair of hits in the win.

Plymouth got an early jump on the home team with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Rozak got things going in the first with an infield single that plated Corey Boudreau. Cody Holmes scampered home later in the frame on the front end of a double-steal.

After Whitman answered with a run in the home half of the first, Plymouth put two more on the board in the second inning. Joe Kingsbury and Brendan Gallahue singled to get things going. Kingsbury scored on a passed ball and Holmes' groundout plated Gallahue with Plymouth's fourth run of the night.

Whitman cut it to 4-2 in the third, but Brian Christian got that run back on a sacrifice fly. Whitman got another run off Rozak in the fifth, but Post 40 answered back with two more runs in the sixth as darkness began to approach.

There was a scary moment in the fourth inning when Plymouth coach Paul Coffin took a direct hit to the forehead on a screaming line drive off the bat of a Whitman hitter. He never lost consciousness, but remained on the ground for several minutes while an ambulance was called. Coffin was taken to the hospital and released later that night after receiving 25 stitches in his head.

Monday night, Plymouth Post 40 players Christian, Rozak and Ted Savage traveled to Orleans to take part in the Zone 10 All-Star Game. The East squad lost to the West, 5-3.

Brian Baker and college stars to play at Atlantic Station

ATLANTA -- The BB&T Atlanta Open will be Brian Baker's tour debut since suffering a torn lateral meniscus in January. The BB&T Atlanta Open will be held at Atlantic Station July 20-28 and is the first men's event in the Emirates Airline US Open Series.

Baker has written one of the best comeback stories in tennis history. The American had an outstanding junior career that included reaching the 2003 French Open finals and a world No.2 junior ranking. He also recorded wins over some of today's top players, including Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga.

After turning pro in 2003, he suffered a string of severe injuries that caused him to miss six years of action. Upon his return in 2012, Baker proved he had not lost his talent by reaching his first career ATP World Tour final in Nice. The former Belmont University men's tennis assistant coach continued to excel, reaching last year's Wimbledon Round of 16 and No. 52 on the Emirates Airline ATP Rankings.

"We are thrilled to be Brian Baker's first tournament back since his Australian Open injury," Tournament Director Bob Bryant said. "Brian has persevered for one of the greatest comebacks in professional sports and the BB&T Atlanta Open is glad to assist him in the next chapter of his career by granting a wild card into our main draw. Additionally, two-time champion Mardy Fish will be returning to action in Atlanta after playing in just one tournament since last year's U.S. Open, giving Atlanta fans the opportunity to witness two great American tennis stories in 2013."

Two players from Georgia universities will be given the opportunity to compete against some of the top tennis players in the world, continuing a tournament tradition. Georgia Tech tennis standout Juan Spir and University of Georgia's Nathan Pasha will receive wild cards into the singles qualifier. John Isner, who will probably be the tournament's top seed, won an NCAA Division I championship with Georgia.

Colombian Spir achieved a No. 44 ITA singles ranking and a No. 10 doubles ranking with partner and Alpharetta native Vikram Hundal. The pair earned All-American honors by advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA Doubles Championship. Spir's results earned him All-ACC Men's Tennis Honors for the third year in a row.

Georgia rising junior and Atlanta resident Pasha recorded a 14-1 record at the No. 6 slot as a freshman and was selected for the SEC All-Freshman Team and named ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year. Pasha finished 2013 with a No. 51 national ranking and a 32-15 record. The ITA named Pasha this year's Southeast Region Player to Watch.

Report: Apple will use IGZO displays for new iPad, MacBook

Apple is reportedly in talks with LG and Sharp to provide IGZO displays for the iPad and MacBook. The new energy-saving technology would deliver better battery life to both portable machines and could arrive on Apple?s tablet as early as this year (or perhaps sometime next year) according to a report from Patently Apple.

IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) displays afford a few benefits over traditional panels. For starters, the thin-film transistors inside these screens allow more light to pass through the back which results in a brighter panel. Furthermore, this trait can also reduce the number of backlit LEDs used which helps to reduce overall cost. And since the panels use a high pixel density, they require less energy which leads to longer battery life in mobile devices like notebooks and tablets.

Sources claim that Sharp is already ramping up production of IGZO panels while LG is in the process of repurposing existing OLED and LCD production lines to build the screens. It was speculated by DisplaySearch analyst Charles Annis that Apple may use the technology from Sharp in the third generation iPad last year but as we now know, that didn?t pan out. Whether or not that decision was on purpose is still up for debate.

Most expect the next generation iPad to hit the scene either later this year or in early 2014 while a refresh of the MacBook line isn?t expected until sometime during the first half of next year. It is unclear whether the report is referring to the full-sized iPad, iPad mini or both, however.

Jealousy can drive us to view ourselves more like our rivals

[unable to retrieve full-text content]If you see your partner flirt with someone else, you may feel hurt, angry, and jealous. The last thing you might expect is to start thinking of yourself more like your rival. New research suggests just that: that jealousy can prompt people to change how they view themselves relative to competitors for their partners' attention.

NBA free agency 2013: Mavs add Ellington, Harris to backcourt

DALLAS ? Wayne Ellington has become the third guard to join the Dallas Mavericks in free agency.

Ellington tweeted late Tuesday night that he had agreed to a contract with Dallas. The deal is reportedly for two years and $5 million.

PHOTOS: SN's Top 20 NBA free agents

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard split last season between Memphis and Cleveland. He was traded to the Grizzlies last summer and went to the Cavaliers midseason in a four-player deal.

The 25-year-old has never averaged double figures in four years, but did score 10.4 points per game in the second half of last season with Cleveland. His career scoring average is 6.9 points.

The Mavericks have also agreed to deals with Jose Calderon and Devin Harris. A fourth guard, Gal Mekel, is coming over from Israel.

Harris is headed back to Dallas nine years after starting his career with them as a high draft pick.

Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki tweeted Tuesday that Harris was rejoining the Mavericks, who ended up with him at No. 5 overall in the 2004 draft in a deal that sent Antawn Jamison to Washington. Harris' contract is reportedly for three years and $9 million.

The 30-year-old Harris averaged 9.9 points and 3.4 assists in Atlanta last season.

Harris spent his first 3 1/2 seasons in Dallas and played in the 2006 NBA Finals before going to New Jersey in the trade for Jason Kidd in 2008. The Nets sent him to Utah when they acquired Deron Williams in 2011.

MIND? FACE? Good thing they called it Xbox

Xbox

Before it was called the "Xbox," Microsoft had some silly ideas for what to name its video game console.

Microsoft

Before it was called the "Xbox," Microsoft had some silly ideas for what to name its video game console.

Before Microsoft officially unveiled the Xbox One, the Internet was awash in speculation about the thing's name. Was it going to be the "Xbox 720?" Maybe just plain old "Xbox?" Or, God forbid, "Xbox Infinity?" Those are all well and good, but how about something like the "FACE 3?"

"FACE" (short for "Full Action Center," err, 3) is just one of the colorful monikers that very well could have been the name of Microsoft's upcoming next-generation video game device if some of the company's branding team had had their way. It could have just as easily been called ? no joke ? "MIND," an acryonym for "Microsoft Interactive Network Device." That's according to the video game magazine Edge, which recently compiled a list of the many other names for the Xbox that Microsoft's gaming team tossed around and eventually scrapped. Xbox may sound like a funny name in its own right, seeing how it originated as a contraction of the phrase "DirectX Box," a reference to the company's computer graphics software DirectX. But after scanning Microsoft's list, I have to admit that I'm glad the team decided to stick with it. You should really take a look at the full list, but here are some of our favorite highlights from what could have been:

O2 (Optimal Ozone or Optical Odyssey). Just imagine the horrible marketing campaign about how gamers need "Halo" and "Gears of War" almost as badly as they need oxygen.

MARZ (Microsoft Active Reality Zone). It's like a cross between that TV network and the red planet! I think it's fair to say that nothing that ever wants to be taken seriously should end with a stylized "Z."

EHQ (Entertainment Headquarters). It's almost like that video game company ? you know, THQ (Toy Headquarters), except hopefully without the rapid-fire changes in management and unceremonious decline into bankruptcy. Team Xbox must have been relieved they threw this one in the trash after THQ finally filed for Chapter 11 protection last year.

VIP (Virtual Interactive Player). On the plus side, I guess this one would have let "Call of Duty" bros rebrand their man caves as "VIP lounges."

MAX (Microsoft Action Experience). The original Xbox was first released in 2001, so I'm guessing someone at the upper echelon's of Microsoft's gaming operation must have seen the classic 1999 Simpsons episode "Homer to the Max" to help come up with this gem. I imagine someone in the boardroom that day saying: "There are three ways to do things: the right way, the wrong way and the Microsoft Action Experience way!" Isn't that just the wrong way? "Yes, but faster!"

Women working shifts are at greater risk of miscarriage, menstrual disruption and subfertility

Women working shifts are at greater risk of miscarriage, menstrual disruption and subfertility [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 9-Jul-2013

London, 9 July 2013: Shift work, which encourages sleep deprivation and patterns of activity outside the circadian rhythm, has been associated with a greater risk of ill health and loss of well-being in some (but not all) studies.(1) However, little is known about the effects of shift work on reproductive health and fertility.

Now, a study reported today at the annual meeting of ESHRE, by Dr Linden Stocker from the University of Southampton, UK, indicates that working shift patterns is associated with an increased risk of menstrual disruption and subfertility.

The study is a meta-analysis of all studies on the subject published between 1969 and January 2013. It compares the impact of non-standard working schedules (including night-shift work and mixed-shifts) with that in women not working shifts. The end-points were early reproductive outcome parameters, including menstrual dysregulation, female fertility and miscarriage rates.

The study, which included data on 119,345 women, found that those working shifts (alternating shifts, evenings and nights) had a 33% higher rate of menstrual disruption than those working regular hours (odds ratio 1.22, statistically significant) and an 80% increased rate of subfertility (OR 1.80, statistically significant).(2)

Women who worked only nights did not have a statistically increased risk of menstrual disruption or difficulty conceiving, but they did have an increased rate of miscarriage (OR 1.29), although this increased risk of miscarriage was not observed in women who worked nights as part of a shift pattern.

The investigators describe their findings as "novel", but in keeping with other studies (which found adverse effects in later pregnancy). "If replicated," they said, " our findings have implications for women attempting to become pregnant, as well as for their employers".

On the implications of the study Dr Stocker said: "Whilst we have demonstrated an association between shift work and negative early reproductive outcomes, we have not proven causation. In humans, the long-term effects of altering circadian rhythms are inherently difficult to study. As a proxy measure, the sleep disruption demonstrated by the shift workers in our study creates short- and long-term biological disturbances. Shift workers adopt poor sleep hygiene, suffer sleep deprivation and develop activity levels that are out-of-sync with their body clock.

"However, if our results are confirmed by other studies, there may be implications for shift workers and their reproductive plans. More friendly shift patterns with less impact on circadian rhythm could be adopted where practical - although the optimal shift pattern required to maximise reproductive potential is yet to be established."

In noting that only some reproductive outcomes were affected by shift work, Dr Stocker reported that the underlying biological disturbances involved in reproductive difficulties "are complex and not the same across all the disease processes". "Indeed," she said, "it is probable that completely different causes underlie menstrual dysfunction, miscarriage and subfertility.

This may explain why the effects of different types of shift work are seen in some groups of women, but not others."

She added that one possible explanation for the overall findings is that the disruption of circadian rhythm can influence the biological function of "clock genes", which have been shown to be associated with changes in biological functions.

###

Abstract 193, Tuesday 9 July 17.15 BST

Do working schedules influence early reproductive outcomes - a metaanalysis

Notes

1. Most studies have concentrated on the association between shift work and cardiovascular risk factors, with an emphasis on circadian rhythm, disturbed activity patterns, reduced social support, psychological stress, stress, unhealthy behaviour (smoking, diet, alcohol, exercise), and metabolic changes (cholesterol, blood pressure). Some studies have found a higher association in shift workers, but results tend to be varied and the studies of inconsistent methodology. Meta-analysis (as in this study) provides a way of pooling the data and applying a consistent methodology.

2. Menstrual disruption was defined as a cycle which deviated from the normal 28 days; either a short menstrual cycle (32 days). Shifts included all women who worked at any time other than a standard day-time schedule. This could include night shifts, evening shifts, split shifts or rotating shifts.
