Homes in Japan broadly follow two set patterns, or styles of residence, the multi-unit apartment complex and the single-unit detached family house. Apartment complexes are more commonly known as mansions, especially in their higher-end incarnation, while lower-end apartments are designed to accommodate families, couples and those on a budget.
Detached housing is a mix of the very new and the very old (in Japan terms). Many of the freestanding housing structures that you see in the big cities are left over from the country`s post-war construction boom, coming in either wooden or concrete forms. Newer housing units make use of more modern materials, though, and are sold often in a standard design set (especially if buying from a company).
One thing that often strikes new residents of Japan who follow the housing market is that Japanese homes are often designed with a lifespan of only a few decades. There are both regulatory (for example earthquake protection) and local socio-economic reasons for this but generally speaking, it is unlikely that a mansion building will remain for 40 years without some form of redevelopment taking place.
Housing in Japan is standardized around a format that lists the number of rooms in a unit in addition to the types of rooms available. As Japanese tradition has often had people sharing a mixed-use living room for cooking, socialising and sleeping, housing does not always include the same set of rooms often found in European or North American homes. Expect to find rooms designated as 2LDK or 1DK (indicated no. of rooms and living, dining and kitchen etc).

SENDAI, Japan (AP) ? About a quarter of the $148 billion budget for reconstruction after the March 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster has been spent on unrelated projects, including subsidies for a contact lens factory and research whaling, a Japanese government accounting shows.
The audit documents released last week buttressed complaints over shortcomings in the reconstruction effort. More than half the 11.7 trillion yen ($148 billion) budget is yet to be disbursed, stalled by indecision and bureaucracy, while nearly all of the 340,000 people evacuated from the disaster zone remain uncertain whether, when and how they will ever resettle.
Many of the non-reconstruction-related projects loaded into the budget were included on the pretext they might contribute to Japan's economic revival, a strategy that the government now acknowledges was a mistake.
"It is true that the government has not done enough and has not done it adequately. We must listen to those who say the reconstruction should be the first priority," Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said in a speech to parliament on Monday.
He vowed that unrelated projects will be "strictly wrung out" of the budget.
But ensuring that funds go to their intended purpose might require an explicit change in the reconstruction spending law, which authorizes spending on such ambiguous purposes as creating eco-towns and supporting "employment measures."
Among the unrelated projects benefiting from the reconstruction budgets are: road building in distant Okinawa; prison vocational training in other parts of Japan; subsidies for a contact lens factory in central Japan; renovations of government offices in Tokyo; aircraft and fighter pilot training, research and production of rare earths minerals, a semiconductor research project and even funding to support whaling, ostensibly for research.
Some 30 million yen ($380,000) went to promoting the Tokyo Sky Tree, a transmission tower that is the world's tallest freestanding broadcast structure. Another 2.8 billion yen ($35 million) was requested by the Justice Ministry for a publicity campaign to "reassure the public" about the risks of big disasters.
Masahiro Matsumura, a politics professor at St. Andrews University in Osaka, Japan, said justifying such misuse by suggesting the benefits would "trickle down" to the disaster zone is typical of the political dysfunction that has hindered Japan's efforts to break out of two decades of debilitating economic slump.
"This is a manifestation of government indifference to rehabilitation. They are very good at making excuses," Matsumura told The Associated Press.
Near the crippled Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant, which suffered the additional blow from the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, recovery work has barely begun.
More than 325,000 of the 340,000 people evacuated from the disaster zone or forced to flee the areas around the nuclear plant after the March 11, 2011 disaster remain homeless or away from their homes, according to the most recent figures available.
In Rikuzentakata, a fishing enclave where 1,800 people were killed or went missing as the tsunami scoured the harbor, rebuilding has yet to begin in earnest, says Takashi Kubota, who left a government job in Tokyo in May 2011 to become the town's deputy mayor.
The tsunami destroyed 3,800 of Rikuzentakata's 9,000 homes. The first priority, he says, has been finding land for rebuilding homes ? on higher ground. For now, most evacuees are housed, generally unhappily, in temporary shelters in school playgrounds and sports fields.
"I can sum it up in two words ? speed and flexibility ? that are lacking," Kubota said. Showing a photo of the now non-existent downtown area, he said, "In 19 months, there have basically been no major changes. There is not one single new building yet."
The government has pledged to spend 23 trillion yen ($295 billion) over this decade on reconstruction and disaster prevention, 19 trillion yen ($245 billion) of it within five years.
But more than half the reconstruction budget remains unspent, according to the government's audit report.
The dithering is preventing the government, whose debt is already twice the size of the country's GDP, from getting the most bang for every buck.
"You've got economic malaise and political as well. That's just a recipe for disaster," said Matthew Circosta, an economist with Moody's Analytics in Sydney.
Part of the problem is the central government's strategy of managing the reconstruction from Tokyo instead of delegating it to provincial governments. At the same time, the local governments lack the staff and expertise for such major rebuilding.
The government "thinks it has to be in the driver's seat," Jun Iio, a government adviser and professor at Tokyo University told a conference in Sendai. "Unfortunately the reconstruction process is long and only if the local residents can agree on a plan will they move ahead on reconstruction."
"It is in this stage that creativity is needed for rebuilding," he said.
Even Sendai, a regional capital of over 1 million people much better equipped than most coastal communities to deal with the disaster, still has mountains of rubble. Much of it is piled amid the bare foundations, barren fields and broken buildings of its oceanside suburb of Arahama.
Sendai quickly restored disrupted power, gas and water supplies and its tsunami-swamped airport. The area's crumbled expressways and heavily damaged railway lines were repaired within weeks.
But farther north and south, ravaged coastal towns remain largely unoccupied.
More than 240 ports remain unbuilt; in many cases their harbors are treacherous with tsunami debris.
Like many working on the disaster, Yoshiaki Kawata of Kansai University worries that the slow progress on reconstruction will leave the region, traditionally one of Japan's poorest, without a viable economy.
"There is almost no one on the streets," he said in the tiny fishing hamlet of Ryoishi, where the sea rose 17 meters (56 feet). "Building a new town will take many years."
Even communities remain divided over how to rebuild. Moving residential areas to higher ground involves cumbersome bureaucratic procedures and complicated ownership issues. Each day of delay, meanwhile, raises the likelihood that residents will leave and that local businesses will fail to recover, says Itsunori Onodera, a lawmaker from the port town of Kesennuma, which lost more than 1,400 people in the disaster.
"Speed," he says, is the thing most needed to get the region back on its feet.

A statement for the McHenry County College Board from Stephen Willson is found below.? Willson is the man who punched holes big enough to drive a bulldozer through the billion dollar (with interest) proposal to completely revamp the MCC campus over the next forty years.
As one of the ?Founders? of MCC, I?m still wondering why McHenry County College?s Board stopped using the Woodstock North High School culinary facility and built its own in Crystal Lake. The prior arrangement seemed like wonderful synergy.
He pointed out that there are fewer third graders in McHenry County schools than seniors, which means the 3% annual growth rate assumed by college officials was apparently picked out of thin air.
Now Willson analyses the plan to build was appears to be mainly a nursing training facility, plus occupational, physical and respiratory therapy,? And, oh, yes.? Twenty-eight percent of the building will be for a fitness center to compete with private enterprise.

?McHenry County College is looking to expand its health and wellness programs with a $42 million building and is looking to private-sector partners to help pay for it.?
The college?s board of trustees will vote on a second-phase feasibility study Oct. 25. The study, if approved, will examine whether a public-private partnership will work to create a health sciences facility. It will look into possible sites for a building and identify potential financial partners and funding sources.
College officials maintain that a public-private partnership ? specifically partnerships with those in the health care field ? would pay for the project without going to voters or raising tuition.
?I?m not saying we would never, but none of the discussions this far have addressed [a tuition increase], as well as a referendum,? said Laura Brown, the college?s vice president of institutional advancement. ?We are not going to a referendum.?
?Any private entity has to augment or supplement our educational focus,? Brown said.
For the college?s share of the partnership, it could leverage debt or employ alternative revenue bonds to be repaid with revenues generated by the project ? namely from tuition from an estimated 1,400 new students and 25,000 incremental credit hours each year.
Additionally, students taking health sciences programs likely would see additional classroom fees.
A phase one study concluded that expanding those programs ? specifically occupational, physical and respiratory therapy, and other health and wellness curriculum ? would require a 120,000-square-foot building, 67 percent of which would be used for classroom spaces and 28 percent for a fitness center.
If the board approves the phase two study, it will hire Addison-based firm Power Wellness for $50,000. The board asked Power Wellness also to explore existing buildings and facilities in the county as potential sites for the expansion.
Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that there are approximately 350 job openings annually in the ?health care and social assistance? sector in McHenry County.
This includes jobs that require an advance degree, such as doctors and registered nurses, and jobs that do not require any degree, and jobs in the ?social assistance? subsector.
So the annual number of job openings in the health care field in McHenry County that will require a two-year degree is probably half of this, or about 175.
As it is possible to obtain a two-year degree at other institutions in the area and as the job force is fairly mobile, the number of annual job openings available to graduates of the proposed program is probably no more than 100.
Yet MCC projects that they will have 1,400 students in this program, or 700 graduating per year.
If they are correct, then this program is a cruel hoax on the students who enroll expecting to be able to find jobs in health care in McHenry County, as only perhaps one in seven will find a job.
Assume the College is correct and the program generates 25,000 incremental credit hours. At the current tuition rate of $90 per credit hour, the gross annual revenue would be $2.25 million.
But the annual mortgage payment on a $42 million is $2.7 million or 120% of the projected tuition. This is before one teacher is hired or the electric bill is paid.
MCC, like most schools, spends about 67% of its budget on personnel and less than 10% on mortgage payments. Thus, less than 20% of tuition money, or perhaps $450,000, would be available to pay the $2.7 million mortgage payment.
There are more than 20 health clubs in McHenry County now. It does not make sense for MCC to build yet another taxpayer subsidized competitor for local private businesses.
This makes MCC twice as fiscally responsible as the Crystal Lake Library, but this is still more than three times the going rate for finished commercial space.
This law was written so that municipalities could obtain lower interest rates on borrowings for utilities with proven track records, such as water and sewer systems, NOT speculative projects such as this.
I know because I was on the advisory committee that helped to write this legislation.
If MCC seeks to use a loophole to do an end run around the voters and burden the taxpayers, I personally will lead the effort to put the bond issue on the ballot.
Further, I will personally fund a class action suit on behalf of the taxpayers alleging fraud in the issuance of such bonds because there is no institution, no corporation, that will be willing to enter into a 30 year contract to guarantee revenues sufficient to pay for this building.
I will sue MCC?s attorney if he issues an opinion that such bonds are legally issued.
I will sue bond counsel for concurring in such an opinion.
I will sue the financial advisor, the feasibility consultant, and the underwriter.
So, in conclusion, I urge the Board NOT to waste more taxpayer money by giving $50,000 to yet another consultant who is hired to deliver
endorsement of this speculative white elephant.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Middle-earth will sound more realistic in "The Hobbit."
Dolby Laboratories Inc. and director Peter Jackson's Park Road Post Production announced Wednesday that "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" will be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos, the company's immersive new sound system that features two extra arrays of overhead speakers and the ability to direct sounds to individual speakers inside movie theaters.
"(Jackson) felt it was going to make a big difference in how he tells stories," said Stuart Bowling, Dolby's senior technical marketing manager. "He doesn't want people to just go and observe his movies. He wants you to feel like you're part of the experience of the stories that's he's trying to tell on the screen and allow you to be part of Middle-earth."
The director of the Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings" films adapted J.R.R. Tolkien's tale of Bilbo Baggins, set in the fictional realm of Middle-earth 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings." Besides the standard 2-D format, Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures are releasing the series in high-frame-rate 3-D, IMAX and other 3-D formats.
Bowling said Dolby's goal is to have the Atmos platform installed in 80 to 100 theaters in time for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 14.
The second and third films, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," are set for release Dec. 13, 2013, and July 18, 2014.
Other movies slated to be released in the Atmos format include Fox's "Chasing Mavericks" and "Life of Pi." Disney-Pixar's "Brave" was the first film to debut with the audio format earlier this year.
Bowling said the company expects more than 15 films to be released in Atmos next year and hoped to have the system in 1,000 theaters by the end of next year.
"Dolby Atmos is fantastic from a sound quality position," said John Neill, head of sound at Park Road Post Production. "We can now hear full range surround speakers, meaning that when we pan from the front to surround, the sound does not change in quality. The overhead speakers give us the opportunity to place the theater patron really in the location."
Jackson shot "The Hobbit" in 3-D and at 48 frames a second, twice the speed that's been the standard since the 1920s. He received a mixed reception for high-frame-rate preview footage of "The Hobbit" at the Cinema Con theater owner's convention last year. Some thought the images were too clear and realistic, taking away from the magic of the film medium.

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 23. THE College Swim Coaches Association of America has released its first NCAA Men's Division I rankings, with the Florida Gators earning a unanimous nod atop the rankings.
The goal of the CSCAA rankings committee this year will be to produce an in-season poll of the 25 best performing teams in rank order at the time of each poll. The poll is not designed to predict the results of the NCAA Championship, but rather which teams would win head-to-head against other teams in the country.
Specifically, the poll committee does not differentiate between the types of meets, or the status of a specific team in terms of rested vs. unrested, when considering votes. Further, rankings are only based on performances that have taken place up to that point in the season. This also means that teams that have not competed up to this point in the season were not eligible to be part of the voting.
Notably, Swimming World has been invited as a media member as part of the polling process, and now has a vote in each poll. Jason Marsteller is serving as Swimming World's representative on these calls.
1. Florida (0-0, SEC 0-0)
Gregg Troy's Gators dominated the All Florida Invitational to open the season, and have shown the top-end speed and depth to take on all comers. The Gators have been led by senior Sebastien Rousseau, junior Marcin Cieslak and sophomore Eduardo Solaeche-Gomez in the early season.

Mike Bottom's Wolverines opened the season 2-0 in conference action with a pair of home dual meet wins over Wisconsin (172.5-115.5) and Minnesota (170-124). Olympian Connor Jaeger and senior transfer Zack Turk are making immediate impacts this fall.
Jaeger leads the country in the 1000 free with a 9:08.33, while standing fifth in the 500 free with a 4:26.88. Turk, meanwhile, is fifth in the 50 free (20.14) and sixth in the 100 free (44.77). Freshman Dylan Bosch is second in the nation in the 200 fly (1:46.77) along with a ninth in the 100 fly (48.70), while sophomore Richard Funk is second in the 100 breast (54.93) and fifth in the 200 breast (2:01.92). 5. Texas (0-0, Big 12 0-0)
Eddie Reese's Longhorns swamped the Southwest Collegiate Plunge to begin the season in a strong way. Sophomore Clay Youngquist, the reigning CollegeSwimming.com National Men's Swimmer of the Week, led the way for UT with a top-ranked 200 free time of 1:36.20 and a third-ranked 500 free (4:25.50).

California is currently a man down as senior Tom Shields is swimming on the FINA World Cup tour during the fall instead of competing with the team. He will be back for the championship season in the spring.
Freshman Josh Prenot has made an immediate impact, ranking second in the 200 breast (2:00.08) and fifth in the 400 IM (3:56.61). Sophomore Will Hamilton, senior Trevor Hoyt, freshman Jacob Pebley and junior Marcin Tarczynski also have ranked times.
California owns the top time in the nation in the 400 free relay with a 2:43.32, while also standing 15th with a 1:31.53 in the 200 medley relay. Kelly Kremer's Golden Gophers helped #2 Michigan begin the season, losing to the Wolverines 170-124 as part of a two-day Michigan Water Carnival. The Gophers have a pair of third-ranked swimmers on the squad with senior Jared Anderson in the 100 breast (55.22) and sophomore CJ Smith in the 1000 free (9:16.76). Neil Harper's Seminoles kicked off the season with a 208-80 thumping of in-state rival Florida Atlantic in a meet held in Miami. NEW YORK (AP) ? Traders seeking safety pushed the dollar higher against most major currencies Tuesday as stocks fell sharply.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell over 200 points after several companies reported weak quarterly earnings and cut their expectations for the year.
DuPont, the chemical maker, said it will cut jobs after sales fell in its third quarter. 3M, which makes products ranging from Post-it notes to coatings for LCD screens, cut its profit predictions for the year.

FORT DUCHESNE, Uintah County?? Just hours after thousands of Catholics from around the world gathered at the Vatican to celebrate Sunday's canonization of seven new saints, a much smaller congregation came together at a tiny church in this reservation town to honor the faith's first Native American saint.
"I think it's an acknowledgement of where real greatness lies," said The Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City.
"It's not in money or possessions or power, but it's in a humble, well-spent life being close to Jesus that still speaks volumes to people almost 400 years later," said Wester, who presided over Sunday's Mass at the Kateri Tekakwitha Center in Fort Duchesne.
Halfway around the world, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Kateri Tekakwitha and six others Sunday in a Mass held at St. Peter's Square that was attended by an estimated 80,000 pilgrims, including three members of the Ute Indian Tribe.
In his homily, the pope praised each of the seven saints as heroic and courageous examples for the entire church, calling Kateri an inspiration to indigenous faithful across North America.
"May her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are," Benedict said. "Saint Kateri, protectress of Canada and the first Native American saint, we entrust you to the renewal of the faith in the first nations and in all of North America!"
"We've been following this for a long time," Clarice Chapoose told the Deseret News last week before departing for Italy.
"I makes us proud, proud that we are Native Americans," she said.
Chapoose, her daughter Susan, and her grandaughter Zennia were among a handful of Utahns of Native American descent to attend the canonization.
"I believe (Kateri) is going to put lots and lots of faith inside Indians because they're not outcasts to the human race, they're part of it," 13-year-old Zennia Chapoose said.
"Maybe young Native Americans who are Catholics will think, 'I am a Native American and I am Catholic. Nobody's going to up me down ever,'" she added.?"They can just ask Kateri to make them be more stronger."
Kateri, known as the Lily of the Mowhawks, was born in 1656 to a Christian Algonquin mother and a traditional Mowhawk chief. When she was 4 years old, a smallpox epidemic killed her parents and brother, and left her with impaired eyesight and a scarred body.
When she chose to be baptized into the Catholic Church in 1676, Kateri was ostracized by her tribe. She became a nun in 1679, but died one year later at the age of 24. Her last words were, "Jesus, I love you," and the smallpox scars on her face disappeared mintues after her death, according to witnesses.?
Kateri was declared venerable in 1943 by Pope Pius XII and beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1980. When the Vatican determined that Jake Finkbonner, a 12-year-old Washington state boy of Native American descent,?was cured of a flesh-eating bacteria through Kateri's intercession after his family and community invoked her in their prayers, it paved the way for her canonization.
Susan and Zennia Chapoose encountered Finkbonner at a recent Kateri Tekakwitha conference in New York. It was an experience that still moves Susan Chapoose to tears.
"It was neat to see him, knowing that he is a miracle," she said.
"His face was disfigured, but we believe that as soon as (Kateri) is canonized, his face will clear up," Clarice Chapoose added.
Bishop Wester pointed out that while Catholics do pray to saints, they do not worship them.
"There are some people who live such an extraordinarily holy life, an exemplary life," he said. "It's like the church is saying here's somebody worthy of following, here's an example you should try to follow.
"They are seen as people like us who are in heaven now," he added. "They intercede for us, they pray for us in heaven and we believe their prayers are very powerful."
To have Kateri working on their behalf is important for the church's Native American congregants, Bishop Wester said, because?"it gives them a saint that's particularly their own."
"To have one of your own be declared a saint, it makes you feel like, 'Hey, I could do this, too. I could become a saint,'" Bishop Wester said. "I think that's very special."

Anyone who?s been to the beach on a hot day knows the feeling of scorching sand underfoot. But do beetles that cross the sunny savanna or dwell in the desert feel it, too? Biologists have found that not only do dung beetles?which famously feed on feces rolled across the sand until it becomes a smooth sphere? feel the burn, their snack lets them beat the heat.
Dung beetles such as Scarabaeus (kheper) lamarcki typically select a pile of poo, often from a local herbivore, then roll it in a straight line to escape competitor beetles as quickly as possible. Along the way, the beetle occasionally clambers up, stretches out its head, rotates 360 degrees, and repeats?a maneuver referred to as the orientation dance (it?s hard to know you?re moving in a straight line when your head?s down and you?re pushing a ball). Biologists at Lund University in Sweden and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa were studying this behavior in an effort to understand the insect?s visual navigational skills only to discover that the treasured dung ball serves as a sort of portable AC unit.
The scientists were observing S. lamarcki?s natural behavior when they noticed that around noon each day, beetles would climb up and begin preening?as you can see in the video below.
To test whether the heat might be affecting the beetle?s behavior, the scientists set up an experiment in which beetles rolled their dung balls at midday in either a well-shaded or sunny arena. They found that dung beetles in the hot arena climbed up on their ball more often, swiping at their faces and body.
Next, researchers decided to test whether the beetles climbed to get their feet off of the hot sands. In a bold scientific and sartorial experiment, they affixed dental silicone ?boots? on the beetles? front legs. When comparing boot-wearing to barefoot insects, the scientists found those in boots climbed up 35 percent less often and could push their dung ball for about twice as long without taking a break.
But what exactly does the dung ball do? For one, dung is moist, meaning as it rolls along it loses heat through evaporation. In other words, the same principle?evaporative cooling?that works in your AC, is at work here?albeit in a more portable format. Thermal video footage confirmed that the typical dung ball was distinctly cooler than either the beetle itself or the ground. In addition, the scientists found that beetles climbed up the dung ball significantly more often if the ball was heated (left in the sun for half an hour) as opposed to chilled (set in the freezer), which suggests the ball may also cool the sands as the beetle rolls it, giving the insect?s feet a little extra relief. The result, as the researchers call it, is a ?mobile thermal refuge.?
The findings are published today in the journal Current Biology. Whether more beetle boots are in the research group?s future remains unclear. Jochen Smolka, a biologist at Lund University and an author of the study, notes that putting on the boots was easier said than done: ?It?s actually hard to put them on their legs and hold out their forearms?they have very strong forearms.? For future studies, other beetle apparel is a distinct possibility?the scientists have also used dental silicone (which can be easily applied and peeled off without harming the insect) to fashion ?blinders? for vision tests. ?This group has a history of creating clothing for beetles?we?ve already created caps?it will be interesting to see what comes next,? Smolka says.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Contact lenses, particularly the extended wear variety, render wearers vulnerable to eye infections from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These infections can cause severe damage, including blindness. Treating the eye with antibodies to the inflammatory immune compound interleukin-17 (IL-17) reduced eye damage and the number of bacteria in a mouse model. The research is published in the October Infection and Immunology.
The onslaught of Pseudomonas infection of the eye is often swift, and is aggravated by the bacterium's resistance to antibiotics. "Pseudomonas is everywhere in the environment, and can be unwittingly introduced into the lens cleaning solution, or directly onto the contact lens, so everyone who uses contact lenses is at risk," says principal investigator Gregory P. Priebe of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and Boston Children's Hospital.
Immune cells known as neutrophils are a major cause of the eye damage that ensues from Pseudomonas infection. IL-17 is involved in attracting neutrophils to the infected tissues. They are the vanguard of immune attack, arriving at a site of infection within an hour, trapping, and ingesting pathogens. In their pathogen-killing function, they also release noxious substances, notably elastase, an enzyme that can chew up tissues, and superoxide, which is converted into hypochlorous acid, more commonly known as chlorine bleach. Thus, the ensuing eye damage is not surprising.
Nonetheless, the strategy of blocking these pathogen killing cells risked reducing the immune system's bacteria-killing function, says Priebe. "Surprisingly, just the opposite was seen: blocking IL-17 with antibodies led both to fewer neutrophils in the eye, and to fewer bacteria," says Priebe. Thus, he says, the research may lead to effective treatments.
"We thought that blocking IL-17 infection might worsen eye infections, but found just the opposite,' says Priebe . "Interestingly, this is a common pattern in eye infections. The body's responses that make the damage worse are often the same things needed to limit infections in other tissues, such as the lung."
