Thousands pray for US at 'America for Jesus' rally

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Thousands of conservative Christians gathered Saturday on Independence Mall in Philadelphia to pray for the future of the United States in the weeks before the presidential election.

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins topped a full day of speakers at "The America for Jesus 2012" prayer rally.

Robertson, a former Republican candidate for president, called the election important, but didn't mention either major political party or candidate by name.

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheists say. This nation belongs to Jesus, and we're here today to reclaim his sovereignty," said Robertson, 82, who founded the Christian Coalition and Christian Broadcasting Network, and ran for president in 1988.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

"We pray that his eyes will be open to the truth," Perkins said.

A number of event organizers, though, have been vocal critics of the Democratic president.

Steve Strang, the influential Pentecostal publisher of Charisma magazine, which was distributed at the rally, recently wrote in a blog post that America is under threat from a "radical homosexual agenda." He also said Obama "seems to be moving toward some form of European socialism."

And speaker Cindy Jacobs has blamed a mysterious Arkansas bird-kill last year on Obama's repeal of the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell," which allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

Egypt's president heads to Turkey to build emerging alliance of moderate Islamist governments

CAIRO - Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi travels to Turkey on Sunday to strengthen an emerging alliance between two moderate Islamist governments in a region beset by conflict and instability.

Even though Morsi has only been in power for a few months, there are already strong signs a partnership with Turkey is forming, evidenced by a common effort to end Syria's civil war by urging the exit of President Bashar Assad from power.

Earlier this month, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the Egyptian capital Cairo and pledged $2 billion in aid to boost confidence in an economy badly battered by a tourism slump, strikes and ongoing protests since the fall of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in an uprising last year.

During the 12-hour visit, Morsi will try to strengthen economic ties with Turkey ? a country his Muslim Brotherhood group views as an Islamist success story, mixing a strong economy with Western ties and Islamic piety.

Turkey, a NATO member with a mostly Muslim, but not Arab, population, has been touted as a democratic model for Egypt and other Arab countries swept up in popular revolts over the past two years.

After initially looking to the Turkish ruling party as a role model, the Islamic fundamentalist Brotherhood in Egypt has cooled to the idea because of Turkey's strong secular leanings. Morsi and the Brotherhood, on the contrary, have been criticized by their opponents for pushing a more conservative Islamist line, particularly in drafting the country's new constitution.

"Before the revolution, we saw (Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip) Erdogan's regime ... as a successful model that can be emulated," said Dina Zakaria, a member of the foreign relations committee of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. "But can it be with all its details and can it all suit Egyptian society? Of course not."

Turkish officials and media have voiced enthusiasm for the relationship with Cairo after the uprising. Turkish President Abdullah Gul was the first foreign leader to visit Egypt after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011, meeting with both the largely liberal and secular youth groups that spearheaded the pro-democracy revolt as well as with generals from the ruling military council who took over from Mubarak and then eventually transferred power to the democratically elected Morsi.

Erdogan got a warm welcome in Cairo last year, with crowds of Brotherhood supporters lining the airport road upon his arrival, some of them carrying banners reading: "Erdogan is a hero."

Erdogan has encouraged Egypt to mimic the Turkish model of governance.

But Zakaria said that after frequent visits to Turkey and meetings with different groups there, she is convinced Egyptian society would not accept Turkey's secular constitution.

Many in conservative Egypt equate the term secularism with "anti-Islam." As efforts to draft the country's constitution are marred by disputes over what many liberals perceive as overtly Islamist clauses in the charter, Zakaria ruled out drawing inspiration from the Turkish constitution.

"Their constitution won't work here in Egypt," she said. "There are things Egyptian people won't accept," she added, referring mainly to the separation of religion and he state.

One of the founding principles of Turkey's constitution is that it is a secular democracy, something that contradicts Egypt's old constitution, and is not even considered in the writing of the new charter. Debate remains in Egypt over whether to keep the current charter, which cites the principles of Islamic law as the basis of legislation, or to harden it to include a reference to specific Islamic laws which would guide all legislation.

But when it comes to foreign affairs and economics, there is much that Egypt can gain from Turkey's experience, Zakaria said.

Certainly on the international stage, Cairo and Ankara have much in common. Both want Assad of Syria to quit and Iran, his ally, to stay out of the civil war there. Ankara and Cairo have teamed as part of a regional initiative to try to solve the Syrian crisis, an effort that could form a strong foundation of future cooperation.

"Turkey couldn't do anything alone when it comes to Syria. One hand alone won't clap," Zakaria said. "What is clear now is that the two countries need to have strong relations because we have serious regional problems and we need each other."

Mustafa Ellabbad, an Egyptian expert on Turkish relations, said Turkey wants an Arab partner in its bid for regional influence in the Middle East and its affiliation with the Brotherhood would serve as a foundation for a moderate Islamist alliance. The Brotherhood, in return, looks to Turkey for assistance as a bridge to the West. But for some of Egypt's more radical Islamists, "the Turkish model doesn't even deserve to be labeled Islamic," Ellabbad said.

But Morsi could turn to Turkey for help on other domestic issues, chief among them the economy. He has already visited Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, China, Iran, Italy and Belgium before his recent trip to New York, where he addressed the U.N. General Assembly. His frequent travels have raised criticism that he is paying more attention to foreign policy issues than domestic problems. However, the economic issues appear high on the agenda on most of his foreign trips.

"The economic portfolio is certainly one of the most important ones between Egypt and Turkey," Yasser Ali, the presidential spokesman, said Saturday.

Egypt's economy is faltering under the weight of shrinking foreign investment and numerous labor strikes demanding better wages and representation in state-owned companies. The political system remains far from stable, and a referendum on a new constitution and new parliamentary elections that will follow that will test the performance of the Brotherhood's Islamist politics.

This is where Morsi may turn to Turkey for inspiration.

Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, or AKP, has had an extraordinary record of electoral success and longevity, coming to power in 2002 amid economic hardship and a fractured political landscape, and then comfortably winning general elections again in 2007 and 2011.

Zakaria could not confirm local media reports that the AKP provided assistance to the Brotherhood's political party ahead of Egypt's parliamentary elections last year. Brotherhood officials told Egyptian media that the party's local branch in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, signed a partnership deal with the AKP in Istanbul, ahead of last winter's parliamentary elections.

Morsi is also expected to attend the annual congress of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party, a first for an Egyptian leader, and is invited to attend an economic forum organized by the Turkish chamber of commerce on Sunday.

Hassan Malek, a prominent businessman from the Muslim Brotherhood traveling to Turkey with Morsi, said there is much that Egypt can learn from Turkey in the fields of manufacturing, industry and trade zones. He said Egypt could particularly benefit in the fields of manufacturing apparel, and electronics.

Egypt's Minister of Economic Cooperation Ashraf el-Araby told local media that a committee at the level of prime ministers will be formed to push economic cooperation, including opening the African market for both countries. Trade between the two countries has already reached $3.8 billion in the first nine months of 2012, a 27 percent increase compared to the same period last year, said Turkey's ambassador to Egypt Hussein Awny. He estimated the figure could rise to reach $5 billion by the end of the year.

"It is not hidden that there is a meeting of minds. Geographically we are close, we have similar visions," Malek said. "This is a new opportunity. There are many things in the Turkish experience we can transfer and benefit from. But we can't copy everything."

College Football Final ? Washington and Lee 42, Guilford 21

Posted By Press Release on September 29, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Luke Heinsohn ran for 146 yards and three touchdowns in Washington and Lee University?s 42-21 win at Guilford College Saturday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football opener for both teams. The senior also converted all six point-after-touchdown attempts and set the Generals? career scoring record with 228 points.

After a scoreless first quarter, Washington and Lee (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) broke through with three second-quarter touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Lombardo?s one-yard scoring run early in the second quarter capped a 16-play, 89-yard drive and opened the game?s scoring. Washington and Lee?s defense held Guilford to three plays and a punt, and Lombardo marched the Generals 62 yards in eight plays on the ensuing possession. A four-yard Sasha Vandalov touchdown run ended the drive and opened a 14-0 Generals? lead.

Heinsohn scored his first touchdown of the game 3:43 before halftime on a 13-yard run and then scored on another 13-yard run early in the third quarter for a 28-0 Washington and Lee advantage. The Generals? Russell Stewart (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) intercepted a tipped pass for the game?s lone turnover, which set up Heinsohn?s final score, a one-yard plunge with 36 seconds left in the third quarter.

Guilford (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) scored all of its points in the fourth quarter. Josh Williams (Durham, N.C./Jordan) capped a 13-play, 64-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 10:12 left. Rookie quarterback Matt Pawlowski (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) hit Lawrence Blake with a 29-yard touchdown with 4:44 remaining and Pawlowski?s backup, rookie Mitch Ferrick, closed out the scoring on a nine-yard touchdown pass to Austen Thompson (Greensboro, N.C./Southern Guilford) two seconds before the final horn.

Washington and Lee?s modified option offense rolled up 505 total yards, including 426 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. The Generals totaled 30 first downs and held the ball for nearly 36 minutes. Brett Murray picked up 104 rushing yards on 15 carries and Luke Terna added 70 rushing yards, 45 of which came on a fourth-quarter touchdown run on a fourth-and-two play.

Guilford?s Pawlowski completed 22-of-35 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. Nick Mearite (High Point, N.C./Ragsdale (UNC Pembroke)) made seven receptions for 43 yards and Mike Williams (Mebane, N.C./Orange) led the Quakers? backs with 40 rushing yards on eight carries. Satiir Stevenson made a career-high 15 tackles from his safety position, nine solo. Hunter English (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) added 13 stops and ODAC tackles leader Robert Smith (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) finished with 10, his fifth straight contest with at least 10 takedowns.

Guilford visits ODAC newcomer Shenandoah University next Saturday (10/6) in the first football meeting between the two schools.

India's FDI retail saga: From Wal-Mart to Agarwal-Mart?

WASHINGTON: "I actually did vote for the $ 87 billion (war funding) before I voted against it," was a line that destroyed John Kerry's Presidential campaign in 2004. He could never live down the flip-flopper reputation after opponents simplified his statement to "I was for the Iraq War before I was against it." Subtle nuances and elegant explanations, not to speak of a possible change of heart after things went south, were lost in the verbal melee in an atmosphere where you were either "for it or against it."

Something similar is happening in the debate in India about foreign direct investment in the retail sector, in which the American superstore Wal-Mart has become the figurehead. You are either for FDI or against FDI; Wal-Mart is all good or pure evil. Look, look...says one distinguished opposition leader now in his twilight years, even Americans (or New Yorkers) are against it. Of course, some Americans are against Wal-Mart; many are for it. Many Americans are also pro-outsourcing. And anti-globalisation. And pro-China. And anti-China. It's never black and white.

In fact, as the popular Facebook-era metaphor goes: It's complicated. As someone who divides his time between U.S and India, here's my $ 0.02, or Rs 1.06 at the current exchange rate, about the FDI/WalMart debate: I am against Wal-Mart in America, and for Wal-Mart in India. How's that for a $ 2.00 Made-in-India flip-flop ? or "double standard" as a colleague put it? I am also mostly vegetarian in the US, but have no problems eating non-vegetarian in India. And there's a connection between the two.

The simple explanation for all this is the U.S and India are at different stages of market economics, especially in the in production, distribution and marketing of food produce. The US has made some awful mistakes in embracing its current food cycle, the same way it has erred espousing a mindless automobile revolution. So while adopting the "good" that FDI retail/Wal-Mart can offer, there is no compelling reason for India to follow the U.S model to the T; it need not make the same mistakes. Call it retail revolution with Indian characteristics, if that is possible.

Let's break it down with examples by first looking at the "good" that the proposed retail revolution can bring into India, some of which has been articulated by ardent votaries of FDI. First off, it will improve supply chain logistics, including cold storage, and broadly bring India further in tune with 21st century western style market economy. It will save the 30 per cent wastage of perishables that we have been moaning about for 30 years. Of course there is always the question about whether it is better to eat fresh produce never mind the wastage, or whether to can the waste and eat preserved food. We'll come to that later - the simple answer could be it is better to eat something than nothing at all....

Initially at least, the so-called FDI revolution in retail will provide better prices and returns to farmers through better yields, productivity, and distribution. It could also offer more choice, better quality, greater uniformity, improved display and packaging. All this is not a given and will not necessarily improve your health or quality of life. In fact, it could be the other way around. Here's how it has panned out in America.

The corporatization of the food chain has its upside -- and downside. Farmers are coaxed -- or forced -- to improve yields, attain the kind of quality and uniformity that corporate interests demand, and as a result may get more remunerative prices, at least in the beginning. But it also edges out the small and marginal farmer, vastly reduce farm labor (with increased mechanization), and result in mediocre but commercially viable produce.

In fact, this prospect brings home the very malaise that more "advanced" western societies are starting to realize and wanting to avoid or reverse. This is where you want to continue buying from the neighborhood push-card vendor in India who's bringing in fresh produce to your doorstep from a local grower rather than the retail chain with its stock of mass produce whose provenance and vintage is unknown. This is where more and more westerners, at least those who can afford it, are switching to shopping at farmers market with local produce even though it is much more expensive than supermarkets.

So why is it produce cheaper (or will eventually become cheaper) in the supermarkets, you ask? Because the economies of scale make big chain produce much cheaper. They also have deeper pockets to suffer initial losses and eliminate competition, as Wal-Mart has demonstrated in many countries.

What modern retail in the west has done is introduced food produce not just on an industrial scale but on an industrial quality too. And this is where my "prefer vegetarian in U.S but okay with non-veg in India" choice kicks in. That massive ten-pound pack of chicken breast at dirt cheap price...we really have no idea of its origins or vintage. Wait...we do have a rough idea. It was raised in a massive chicken farm owned by a corporate monopoly in methods and circumstances that will make you puke. Chicken (or cattle) that are cooped up in the dark, medicated, and force-fed continuously so that they attain maximum weight in the minimum time with minimum movement and metabolism. That's how corporates maximize profit. In India, you still have to the option of seeking out the healthier free-range or home-grown chicken, fresh locally grown- or sourced vegetables and fruits. You could be saying goodbye to all that (or at least end up paying much much more) with the FDI fiesta.

On a recent trip to the great American outback, your correspondent saw visual evidence of what this corporatization and industrialization of food production - widely seen as inevitable once the retail FDI gates are open - can do to the landscape and population. Thousands upon thousands of acres of farmland, typically owned or leased by corporates or large farming interests, grew bounteous harvests of corn (even in a drought year). This was not the corn, the "bhutta" from the push cart vendor that you eat with relish. It is mostly genetically modified, tasteless, industrial-grade rubbish that is aimed at maximizing yield. When it is not used as animal feed, it is turned into corn syrup which is used sweeten almost everything you see in the supermarket, including that sugary soft drinks you guzzle.

The result is all too visible in much of the U.S., nowhere more than the heartland of the country, where people come in large, economy size, with consequent health issues (obesity linked diabetes and heart disease). Much of this comes from eating cheap, low-quality, industrial grade food -- from mass-produced breads and meat. There are few places in the world is where food available as cheaply (relative to income) as America. Till a couple of decades ago, Americans spent up to 15 per cent of their income on food; it is now below ten per cent and still dropping. It is now an accepted fact that the poorer the state in America, the more obese people are, because they are eating cheap, mass-produced food of the kind offered by fast-food chains. That dreadful burger and pizza and cola that you are wolfing down from the retail assembly line...it's the cheapest and the worst kind of food you could be eating.

So here's the equation. If you allow the kind of retail revolution that has overtaken America, you could end up consuming cheap, low grade, mass-produced, industrial quality produce. Of course, it is easy to sniff down at all this from the high vantage point of those who have money in the pocket and the luxury of choice. But what about those with limited means who cannot afford to spend as much on fresh produce as corporatization of the food chain takes hold? So should be just reject the American/western way and stick to our current way, as many of those opposed to the Wal-Mart way are recommending? Then what happens to the farmers who seek better market access and greater returns, who want to eliminate waste and spoilage. Isn't FDI retail lucrative for him -- at least to begin with, before predatory practices set in. Which way should we go? Will we, to paraphrase John Kerry, end up being "for it, before we turn against it."

The answer, without it sounding like a cop-out, is to embrace the middle way. We need all the systems and logistics that FDI retail will bring, but we need to tweak it to make sure we don't go the American way. In some ways we should be reassured by what has happened already: the arrival of American retail food chains such as KFC, McDonalds, and Pizza Hut, did not destroy Indian eateries or Indian eating habits. We took the best practices from them, and today many Indian food outlets have the same look and feel of their western counterparts while continuing to serve the Indian palate. So the arrival of Wal-Mart may just herald the birth of the Agarwal-Mart.

Al-Qaida group withdraws from its last Somali bastion

Stringer / AFP - Getty Images

The al-Qaida-allied al-Shebab militant group said it had left the city of Kismayo, seen above Friday, after it was attacked by a Kenya-Somalia force.

By NBC News wire serives

MOGADISHU, Somalia --?Somalia's al-Shabab rebels withdrew from the southern Somali city of Kismayo overnight, the rebel group and residents said Saturday, a day after Kenyan and Somali government forces attacked the militants' last bastion.

?We moved out our fighters ... from Kismayo at midnight,'' al-Shabab spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, told Reuters.

He threatened to strike back soon. ?The enemies have not yet entered the town. Let them enter ?Kismayo which will soon turn into a battlefield,? he said.

African Union troops from Kenya, Uganda and Burundi have combined over the last 18 months to kick al-Shabab out of the Somali capital Mogadishu and take a series of smaller towns that the insurgents fled to.

Al-Shabab, which formally merged with al-Qaida in February, had earned money by collecting taxes on goods arriving at the Indian Ocean port, so the loss of the stronghold is a double blow to the armed fundamentalist group that began attacks in 2007 and went on to control all but a few blocks of the capital.

D-Day for al-Qaida in Somalia? Troops storm beaches at last stronghold

The assault is likely to send al-Shabab fighters underground. Hardcore fighters may unleash suicide bombs and ambushes but less dedicated fighters could melt back into their communities, further reducing al-Shabab's strength.

At an international one-day summit Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron said the world would "pay a price" if it fails to help Somalia overcome terrorism, piracy and starvation. ITV's Lee Comley reports.?

?

Born in the USA, but now among Somalia's Islamist terrorists

The African Union force said that some al-Shabab fighters have already contacted military officials in recent days, saying they wanted to defect from al-Shabab.

Expert: War on terror at 'critical' point as al-Qaida looks to regroup in Africa

Speaking on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York Friday, Kenya's Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi called the entry of Kenyan forces into the Somali port "a significant victory."

"This is a major blow to them and we think it's positive for the region and for Somalia," he said.?

Fred Alger fails to end whistleblower case over firing

(Reuters) - Fred Alger Management Inc failed on Thursday to win dismissal of a whistleblower lawsuit by a former portfolio manager who said she was fired in retaliation for protesting that the money manager's trading policy benefited colleagues at her expense.

District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan said that Rosanne Ott, who ran the New York-based firm's Alger Health Sciences fund from 2005 until her January 2011 firing, could pursue her wrongful termination claim. Several other claims were dismissed.

The lawsuit is one of the earliest brought after the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reforms banned companies from retaliating against whistleblowers, including those like Ott who provided the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission with information about alleged violations of securities laws.

Alger was founded in 1964 and had about $16.2 billion of assets under management as of June 30, according to its website.

Scott Anderson, an Alger spokesman, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Todd Norbitz, a lawyer for Alger and its Chief Executive Daniel Chung, also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Ott, a former U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot, claimed that Chung in April 2010 instituted a policy that let some fund managers place trades for their funds ahead of her, and forcing her to get permission to make trades.

She said this helped other funds but not hers to perform better, in what a colleague likened to "sabotage."

Ott said she filed a formal complaint with the SEC on September 7, 2010. She said that soon afterward, she was subjected to harassment, saw her bonus reduced by 92 percent, and was replaced as head of Alger's health care group. She sued in June 2011.

Alger contended that the lawsuit should be dismissed, saying that Ott had "contrived a controversy" regarding the trading policy, amid increased strains with the firm that had stemmed from her "deteriorating professional performance."

Preska dismissed nine of Ott's 10 claims, including claims over bonuses and an alleged failure to pay deferred compensation that had yet to vest at the time of the firing.

But she said there was enough evidence that Ott reasonably believed that the trading policy was illegal, and that her complaints contributed to the loss of her job.

Preska cited a September 2010 conversation from the lawsuit in which Chung supposedly told a co-worker, referring to Ott: "You know, Rose is wrong and the board supports me. She is gonna start feeling the heat."

The judge said: "It is fair to infer from this statement that Chung was referring to Ott's position on the trading policy and her reports to the SEC. At the pleading stage, this allegation is sufficient."

The case is Ott v. Fred Alger Management Inc et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-04418.

Making your own jewelry is a fun hobby that allows you to express your creative side. But you can turn your fun hobby into a great work-at-home business by setting up your own jewelry parties. A jewelry party business allows you to set your own work schedule, and have a lot of fun sharing your jewelry designs while making money. So how do you make sure you?re successful? Just follow these simple tips and you?re on your way to having your own successful jewelry party business.

To Host or Not to Host?

You can host two types of parties. The first jewelry party that you hold will be hosted in your own home, and you will invite your own circle of family and friends. The benefit to this type of party is that you get to keep all the profits because you are the host of the party. Also, because the guests are all personal friends, this is a good way to build confidence and learn the ropes, because no one will be overly critical.

The second type of party is where you get bookings by asking others to host the jewelry party for you. You agree to share a percentage of the sales profits (or free jewelry!) with the hostess. The hostess will invite their own list of friends to the party, and the party will be held at their home instead of yours. The benefit of this party is that you can get a lot more parties scheduled because the guest list will always include new customers, and you don?t have the expense of hosting the party in your own home. The only downside is that you share some of the profits, but if you carefully price your jewelry to maximize profit, this can easily be off-set. Plus, a hosted party means the hostess (and not you) will be covering the food and drink expenses of holding the party.

I suggest you start off hosting your own party, and before the party is complete, try to set up at least one booking for another party at someone else?s home. Jewelry parties are usually so successful you won?t have any problem scheduling new ones, but if you don?t get a booking right away, don?t be discouraged. Simply follow up with a friendly phone call or email to the party guests a month or so after your first party, and by then people will be wanting to buy new jewelry and book a party! You can always remind people of an upcoming holiday (Valentine?s Day, Mother?s Day, etc.) to suggest a good time for more jewelry sales.

There are two things you need to focus on to have successful parties. The first is profitability. Quite simply, don?t sell your jewelry for less than it is worth or you will lose money! Make a list of all the costs of jewelry supplies, and then factor in something for your time to come up with a fair price for your jewelry. Also, if you are hosting a party in your own home, don?t forget there will be costs for food and beverages, so you might want to factor those costs in as well. After you have a few parties you will have a better idea of what people will pay for your jewelry. Charge a little more for your best-selling pieces.

The second thing to focus on is being prepared to have a good party. Follow this checklist and your parties will run smoothly.

Invitations

Send invitations at least two weeks in advance so people can make plans. I like to use http://www.evite.com to create my own email invitations. They have lots of fun templates to choose from, or if you prefer paper invitations, make your own using stick on crystals or find some jewelry themed cards. To really grab people?s attention and interest, attach a pair of earrings to the invitation. It might cost you a few bucks, but people love getting something for free and it is a good teaser for your sale of more expensive items.

Customizations and ?While you Wait? Jewelry

Always bring pliers and some basic findings so you can customize the length of bracelets and necklaces. If you come prepared, you can also make ?while you wait? jewelry for guests, allowing people to select their beads from your stash and you can make up custom jewelry right then and there?people LOVE this! These parties are very successful, and the only downside is you are so busy making jewelry that you won?t have much time to enjoy the party.

Food & Drinks

Make sure you have both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and a nice selection of snacks available. After all, this is a party so you do want to provide a nice social atmosphere and make sure people are comfortable and happy.

Decor

Decorate with tablecloths and candles. Allow yourself an hour to set up before guests arrive, in addition to any food prep time. I use a black velvet scrap of fabric I picked up at the fabric store as jewelry looks great on it. Some jewelry looks better on a light background, however, so pick up a few tablecloths or fabric and give yourself some options. Decide ahead of time which table or tables will be used for displaying your work. Try to decorate in a way that will enhance the style of your own jewelry (fun, sophisticated, etc.). Use jewelry displays (which you can purchase inexpensively on eBay) such as necklace busts, earring holders, and jewelry displays, or use whatever you have?a wicker tray filled with glass marbles makes a good backdrop for bracelets. Always make sure you have good lighting so people can see the jewelry. Play some music softly in the background to complete the ambiance. Finally, candles are a really nice romantic touch.

Other Details

Have measuring tape, jewelry pliers and some basic findings, table or hand mirrors, gift wrap and cards, and business cards ready. Also, everyone will want to see the jewelry in a mirror, so make sure you have some around. Pass your business cards out to everyone so they can easily contact you when they want more jewelry.

Now you?re on your way to hosting your own successful jewelry party business. For more jewelry business inspiration, as well as free jewelry making ?How To?s?, check the website http://www.Making-Jewelry.com.

First Mammals Observed Regenerating Tissue

Yeah, but if you read the article you'd know humans suck at regeneration. It's not impressive that we can regenerate (very, very slowly) the extreme tip of a finger or toe (as long as all the knuckles are left intact), or the kidney *MIGHT* regenerate somewhat, but doesn't happen often enough to be in the literature or commonly suspected. And we can regrow a rib or two over the course of *YEARS* as long as the sac surrounding the rib remains intact.

About the only thing we humans are good at regrowing is liver, and that's only with healthy liver, and doesn't work rupture or puncture that isn't cauterized/sutured. We'll completely regrow a new liver if as much of 3/4ths are removed. Which is actually pretty impressive. But not very cool as a superpower....

The point of the discovery is that there's interesting mechanisms at work allowing these mice to heal in an absolutely complete way, never before documented in mammals. And with further study we might be able to apply their biochemistry to the human healing process. There's a lot of potential, and it looks like an interesting, if not promising, avenue for research.

Quit bitching, cuz I'll bet 10:1 if you lose the tip of your finger, you'll likely not regrow it, and if you do, there will be a lot of scar tissue. If you lose a square inch of skin all at once, there WILL be extensive scarring.

These mice don't scar. How is that not awesome.

AP Exclusive: Brown did service at his old daycare

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Chris Brown has logged more than 1,400 hours of community service for the 2009 beating of former girlfriend Rihanna, basically completing his sentence. The Associated Press has learned one-third of those hours were recorded at a rural Virginia daycare center where the singer spent time as a child and his mother once served as director.

And in the last seven months, an AP analysis of the work records indicates Brown's labor credits increased by four times from what they had been during the previous two years. Yet through it all, Brown hasn't stopped being an R&B superstar, performing worldwide, releasing an album and even getting injured in a nightclub brawl.

Brown's service records have come under scrutiny by a prosecutor and a judge, who are trying to ascertain their accuracy. At a Monday hearing, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg called the accounting of Brown's community service by Richmond, Va., Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood "somewhat cryptic."

No specific concerns were detailed by the court, yet the AP analysis of Brown's service shows that in the past seven months, the artist has been credited for working 701 hours ? a feat that previously took him 28 months to achieve, clocking sporadic, shorter shifts mostly at Richmond police and fire stations.

In recent months, the logs show Brown has essentially been working three jobs ? performing cleanup duty in Richmond police precincts by day, janitorial chores at the daycare 45 miles east by night, and hit songs for global audiences in between.

Ida Minter, the administrator of the Tappahannock Children's Center, said Brown attended the nonprofit facility "off and on" for more than 12 years and his mother was employed there for 24 years, including as director.

Brown's community service at the center began in January 2010, but work entries dramatically increased in March of this year. Most of his shifts were logged between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. and were typically listed as "general cleaning," with some entries describing him painting or stripping and waxing floors. It is unclear who supervised him.

Brown's attorney Mark Geragos said Monday that he welcomed inquiries from Los Angeles probation officials and said he urged Brown to work double shifts so the lawyer wouldn't have to keep coming back to court.

Minter described Brown's work at the daycare center favorably.

"I think Chris always goes beyond because he always wants to give back to where he grew up," she told the AP. "And this was a part of his home because his mom worked here full-time."

"If you've ever been involved in stripping and waxing, it's hard," she said. "It's a lot of work."

Minter said Brown was always accompanied by someone while working at the center, but she said she couldn't discuss who it was.

The singer, who pleaded guilty to felony assault in June 2009, only worked at night and on weekends when no children were present, Minter said. That is supported by the logs, which also showed that Brown only worked one other weekend shift that wasn't at the daycare center.

Brown has been undeniably busy in recent months, releasing his new album "Fortune," traveling to France for a video shoot, winning a Grammy Award, performing at other award shows and resuming his friendship and music collaboration with Rihanna.

He has also drawn negative attention for being present at a bottle-throwing brawl at a New York City nightclub that left him with a cut chin. And in February, a woman in Miami accused him of taking her cellphone to prevent her from snapping pictures of him.

It was after that incident that Brown, 23, accelerated his work schedule, completing the 701 hours in seven months, according to the records filed Monday.

Meanwhile, the singer has remained an active promoter of his work on Twitter, where he sends out almost daily links to his music and clothing line, and also interacts with fans.

His international travel, which must be approved by Schnegg, has somehow been squeezed around his marathon community service sessions.

In July, for instance, Brown is listed as working 42 hours in four days before leaving for France. Upon his return, he worked 12 consecutive days, logging 164 hours, 100 of which were at the daycare described in Norwood's log as "Tappa Day Care."

March was similarly busy, with Brown being credited for work on 20 of the month's 30 days; he was approved to travel to Cancun, Mexico, for five of the remaining days.

Before this week, Brown had received praise from Schnegg and had never been in danger of violating his probation. But that could change if the inquiry the judge ordered turns up irregularities with the singer's service.

Schnegg allowed Brown to perform his work in his home state of Virginia under the supervision of Norwood, but on Monday noted there are discrepancies in the chief's accounting.

For one, Brown's work log shows he has put in 1,402 hours, but a couple of errors in the data may push the total up to 1,404. And although Brown was sentenced to perform 1,440 hours of labor, the chief wrote in a letter dated Sept. 14 that Brown had completed all his service hours.

Norwood's spokesman declined to respond to questions from the AP on the discrepancies. "Chief Norwood has reported directly to the judge, providing periodic updates regarding the progress of Chris Brown's community service," spokesman Gene Lepley said.

Prosecutors "are not happy with the quality of the report," Schnegg said Monday. "They don't know if it's reliable, yes or no."

District Attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said the office would make all its comments on the case in court.

The judge and prosecution aren't the only ones concerned about the administration of Brown's sentence. In August, Virginia probation authorities recommended that Richmond police stop supervising Brown after the singer tested positive for marijuana and what they believed was unapproved travel to France. However, they made no critical comments about his community service.

Geragos, Brown's attorney, declined comment for this story, but he said at Monday's court hearing that he believes his client has completed all his community service.

Brown's labors have left a lasting mark at the Tappahannock Children's Center: a colorful wall mural featuring a huge clown face and splashes of purple, orange, green and yellow. The words "Big Room" ? the informal name of the large space amid a warren of smaller classrooms ? is painted in fat letters along a wall where jackets are hung on hooks.

Brown approached Minter, who has known Brown since his birth, to ask if he could use his art skills on the walls of the big room, she said.

The singer is not the only celebrity to perform community service with an entity to which they have close ties. Mel Gibson and Sean Penn had similar arrangements.

Both actors had received permission in advance for the assignments in misdemeanor cases. Before Monday's filings, there had been no mention of Brown working at his boyhood daycare center in probation reports.

Simple Tips to Improve Your Website Text | Business 2 Community

Content Works: Simple tips to improve web text

Are you worried about your website text?

Are you afraid of grammar errors and sentences that don?t make sense?

I can understand if you are.

Professional online copywriters worry about what they?ve written.

People who aren?t pros and have to write website text worry more.

And people who aren?t pros, and have to write online copy in a second?language, ?worry most.

As more businesses worldwide work in English, the problem gets more common.

Quick fixes

Here are some easy fixes to improve your online copywriting. Follow these and your site or blog will be easier to read and more engaging for your readers.

?1. Have a conversation with your readers

It?s best to use informal language. When you?re writing, imagine you?re speaking in a business meeting.

Here?s an example of how you can be more conversational. Which sentence is friendlier?

?ABC is a?financial?services provider located in Paris.?

?We?re a team of financial experts based in Paris.?

Yes ? the second one.

Action: Check one text from your website for?dull, formal, redundant phrases. Avoid these examples.

2. Keep it short

That means words, sentences and paragraphs. Research shows that short is easier to scan.

Compare these two texts that say the same thing. Which is easier to scan?

Text A

?Nebraska is filled with internationally recognized attractions that draw large crowds of people every year, without fail. In 1996, some of the most popular places were Fort Robinson State Park (355,000 visitors), Scotts Bluff National Monument (132,166), Arbor Lodge State Historical Park & Museum (100,000),?Carhenge?(86,598), Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer (60,002), and Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park (28,446).?

Text B

?In 1996, six of the most-visited places in Nebraska were:

  • Fort Robinson State Park
  • Scotts Bluff National Monument
  • Arbor Lodge State Historical Park & Museum
  • Carhenge
  • Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer
  • Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park?

It?s pretty clear that B wins!

Action: Go back to one thing you wrote recently to see how you could transform a paragraph.

3. Have a clear message

Be straightforward and specific. Which sentence below has more impact?

?We commit to always reply to our clients? concerns within one business day.?

?We promise to answer in 24 hours.?

The clearer and more specific your language, the easier it is on your readers.

Action: read?this very short post on writing clearly?and follow the advice.

4. Format your text

Use sub-headings to introduce each new idea.?Let?s imagine you?re a bank, and you want to educate prospective customers.

Here?s how you can sub-divide your text.

1. Open your account

Here you explain exactly what the new customer has to do.

2. Apply for a credit card

Here you explain

  • what documents they need
  • where to find the application form
  • and how to send it all to you.

Use bullets to break up text as above.

You can also use bold, italics, ?and numbered lists.

And don?t forget block quotes as a design feature.

Action: If you write in WordPress, the editing bar makes all this super easy. Get familiar with the options and use them.

5.?Rewrite your headlines

Yes, rewrite them. The first one is seldom the best.

For this post, I started with ?How to Give Your Website Copy a Makeover?.

Rejected! ?How to? is over-used. ?Makeover? may not be clear to everyone who speaks English as a second langauge.

Second attempt was ?Improve Your Online Copywriting?.

Rejected! It?s too much like an order. And ?online copywriting? is a highly targeted keyword phrase. ?Website text? has fewer websites competing to rank for it.

Result: Simple Tips to Improve Your Website Text

Everyone has to practice writing headlines.

Action: Read and use these great tips on headline writing.

6. Edit your text

As with headlines, the first draft of your copy won?t be the best. Go through it and cut out any words you don?t need. Like this:

?However, if you want to order by email, click here.?

?Order by email here.?

Change any repeated words, unless they are there for effect.

Compare the two texts below: which example gets to the point?

1. ?Which plan should I choose for my company?

The most important factor in choosing a plan for your company is your age, amount you want to save each month, and your health.?

2. ?Which plan is for me?

Compare the different plans in the box below??

Deliberate repetition is different ? use it for emphasis. Like this:

During the course you?ll learn

  • how to edit your copy
  • how to write better headlines
  • how to format your text.

Break up any long sentences or paragraphs. Just go back to that example from Nebraska to see why.

Action: read up on the basics of ?copy editing.

Put all of that into practice and your website text should look a lot smarter and cleaner. For more advanced tips and help, check out these articles -

Student debt stretches to record 1 in 5 households

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With college enrollment growing, student debt has stretched to a record number of U.S. households ? nearly 1 in 5 ? with the biggest burdens falling on the young and poor.

The analysis by the Pew Research Center found that 22.4 million households, or 19 percent, had college debt in 2010. That is double the share in 1989, and up from 15 percent in 2007, just prior to the recession ? representing the biggest three-year increase in student debt in more than two decades.

The increase was driven by higher tuition costs as well as rising college enrollment during the economic downturn. The biggest jumps occurred in households at the two extremes of the income distribution. More well-off families are digging deeper into their pockets to pay for costly private colleges, while lower-income people in search of higher-wage jobs are enrolling in community colleges, public universities and other schools as a way to boost their resumes.

Because of the sluggish economy, fewer college students than before are able to settle into full-time careers immediately upon graduation, contributing to a jump in debt among lower-income households as the young adults take on part-time jobs or attend graduate school, according to Pew.

As a share of household income, the debt burden was the greatest for the poorest 20 percent of households, or those making less than $21,044. In all, 40 percent of U.S. households headed by someone younger than age 35 owed college debt, the highest share of any age group.

"Comparing the debt to their economic resources, the lowest-income fifth of households are the ones experiencing the greatest stresses," said Richard Fry, a senior economist at Pew who analyzed the numbers.

Noting that college enrollment has continued to climb since 2010, Fry added: "Until college enrollment peaks, I would not expect the amount of outstanding student debt to level off."

The study released Wednesday is based on the Survey of Consumer Finances, conducted every three years and sponsored by the Federal Reserve. The numbers are as of 2010, the latest available for that survey. Separate Fed data have pointed to subsequent increases in student loans since 2010 that totaled $914 billion in the April-June quarter, but don't provide demographic breakdowns on who shoulders the biggest burdens.

Both President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger in this year's election, Mitt Romney, have been seeking to court young voters with differing visions on how to address rising tuition and growing college debt. Obama wants to make tax credits for college expenses permanent and expand Pell grants for lower-earning families. Romney says that making government the direct source of federal student loans has not worked and simply drives tuition higher. He stresses the need to curb college costs.

The Pew report found that the richest 20 percent of households, or those with annual income of $97,586 or higher, owed the biggest share of outstanding student debt ? 31 percent, up from 28 percent in 2007. The poorest 20 percent of households also saw their debt grow, to 13 percent from 11 percent.

The richest households saw significant increases in per-household debt. For those with annual income of $97,586 to $146,791, college debt rose from $25,921 in 2007 to $31,989. For the richest 10 percent, making at least $146,792, college debt increased from $36,033 to $44,810.

Across all households, the average outstanding college debt increased from $23,349 to $26,682. For the poorest 20 percent of households, the average debt rose from $19,018 to $20,640.

In recent years, Americans have cut back on several other types of borrowing such as credit card use, with average household indebtedness falling from $105,297 in 2007 to $100,720 in 2010. Broken down by income levels, however, average total indebtedness for the bottom 20 percent of households by income actually rose from $17,579 in 2007 to $26,779; for the higher income groups, average indebtedness either was unchanged or declined.

Coral hotspots found in deepwater canyons off northeast US coast

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? For the first time in decades, researchers have conducted an extensive exploration for deep-sea corals and sponges in submarine canyons off the northeastern coast of the US. The survey revealed coral "hotspots," and found that a new coral habitat suitability model could help predict where corals are likely to occur. The model is being developed by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) and the National Ocean Service's Biogeography Branch.

Among the canyons surveyed during the July 6-18 cruise aboard the NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow were Toms, Middle Toms, and Hendrickson canyons off New Jersey, and Veatch and Gilbert canyons off Georges Bank. All of these were known or suspected habitats of deep-sea corals. More than 70 deepwater canyons, ranging in depth from 100 meters (about 330 feet) to more than 3,500 meters (about 11,500 feet), exist along the Northeast US continental shelf and slope. Few are well studied.

"The deep-sea coral and sponge habitats observed in the canyons are not like those found in shallow-water tropical reefs or deep-sea coral habitats in other regions," said Martha Nizinski of NEFSC's National Systematics Laboratory in Washington, DC, a zoologist and deep-sea coral specialist who served as the chief scientist on the recent research cruise aboard the NOAA ship Bigelow. "We know very little about the distribution and ecology of corals in the canyons off the Northeast coast," she said. "Although our explorations have just begun, we've already increased our knowledge about these deepwater coral habitats a hundred times over."

Findings from this cruise will not only improve knowledge about deep-sea life off the Northeastern US, but will also aid the New England and Mid-Atlantic fishery management councils in their efforts to manage these habitats, which support a variety of fish species and other marine life.

The July survey on the Bigelow was the culmination of a larger mission to explore deepwater canyons, and gain increased knowledge of deep-sea corals. The Bigelow was one of three NOAA ships involved in the Atlantic Canyons Undersea Mapping Expeditions (or ACUMEN), which has been used to document the deepwater canyons on the continental shelf and slope from Norfolk, Virginia, to New England. During February-June 2012, the NOAA ships Okeanos Explorer and Ferdinand R. Hassler extensively mapped offshore areas designated as priorities by the NEFSC deepwater coral research team and external partners.

Using high-quality multibeam sonar maps, NEFSC scientists and collaborators explored the deepwater canyons in the Northeast. Cruise objectives included gaining a better understanding of deep-sea coral diversity and distribution in the region, and testing the accuracy of a habitat suitability model to predict where deepwater corals exist in the Northeast.

Bottom topography, as well as various other environmental factors, historical coral records, and model predictions helped guide the search and sampling of coral habitats. The science team aboard the Bigelow, using TowCam, a towed deep-sea digital imaging system operated by researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), was then able to photograph what was on the bottom at the sites they chose, which is important for groundtruthing the modeling data.

Many corals observed during the Bigelow cruise live at depths between 200 and 2,000 meters (roughly between 650 and 6,500 feet deep). Although no specimens were collected during this expedition, more than 38,000TowCam images will be analyzed in the coming months. Data derived from these images will be used to evaluate the presence or absence of corals in areas having historical records; to quantitatively verify the habitat suitability model; and to enhance knowledge of the diversity and distributions of deep-sea corals in the region. These data will also provide the baseline information for a three-year research effort in the Northeast funded by NOAA's Deep-Sea Coral Research and Technology program.

"These are the first surveys in several decades for deep-sea corals and sponges in the mid-Atlantic," said David Packer, a marine ecologist at the NEFSC's James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook, NJ. Packer participated in the Bigelow cruise, and was excited about the amount and variety of corals, sponges, and related marine life encountered during the survey and the importance of these findings for the future of deep-sea coral research in the region. "We previously had little or no data about some of the canyons or the available data were decades old, so what we learned in just a few weeks provided a 'quantum leap' in our knowledge about the canyons and their habitats."

The modeling effort to develop the predictive habitat suitability maps was conducted by Amy Drohan at the NEFSC's Sandy Hook lab and Brian Kinlan and Matt Poti, both at NOS. Kinlan participated in the Bigelow cruise and was able to use his expertise to interpret the model findings in the field as well as help guide the search for coral hotspots.

Although the July cruise focused on only a few of the canyons mapped using multibeam sonar, the researchers will also use the bathymetry data collected by the Okeanos Explorer and the Hassler at other deepwater canyons to refine and revise their coral model. In fact, work has already started on a revised model incorporating the new findings.

"Like the hub of a wheel with many spokes, the July Bigelow cruise was central to a project that seemed to grow over time as opportunities arose to leverage resources and use these to their fullest potential," said Nizinski, who has studied deep-sea coral habitats off Florida, off the North Carolina coast, and in the Gulf of Mexico.

"What originally started with 16 days of ship time, provided and funded by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center to explore deepwater canyons off the Northeast coast, rapidly developed into a much larger project," Nizinski said. "What started with informal discussions between NOAA and colleagues led to a major field program that first surveyed and mapped deepwater canyons along the northeast continental shelf and slope, followed by underwater observations to verify coral occurrence. We are excited about the possibilities given the results from this first cruise."

British Airways tests eliminating online check-in

It?s a familiar process to most air travelers by now: Watch the clock before your trip and log on to a computer within 24 hours of your flight to check in online. But even that simple routine, which has been a huge improvement over the previous tradition of standing in a long queue at the airport, might go away in the future ? something industry watchers say isn?t necessarily a plus.

How to explain four future Hall of Famers losing on same day? It's more than a fluke

Sunday marked the first time Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees all lost on the same day.

Despite scoring being as high as ever ? the average game has produced 47.6 points ? something is not right with the 2012 NFL season. It is not just the replacement referees either, though they have been a big factor.

Taking a look at the season's statistical quarterback leaders, you see a lot of the usual suspects in the top 10: the demoted Kevin Kolb, second-year players Andy Dalton and Christian Ponder, rookie Robert Griffin III, and the Harbaugh brothers? fearless leaders Alex Smith and Joe Flacco.

Wait. Is that a list of preseason leaders? Surely it cannot be the real thing? But it is. The quarterbacks we have expected elite performance from based on years of past success are not leading their teams to wins so far.

On Sunday, for the first time ever, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger all lost.

These four future Hall of Fame quarterbacks that we have grown accustomed to seeing wins are a combined 3-9 this season. That is as many wins as Kolb has contributed to the undefeated Cardinals. On Monday night, Aaron Rodgers also lost to join the 1-2 club.

It all adds up to a very awkward season in progress, one that lacks a dominant team or elite offense led by a star quarterback. Should this continue, you would have to go back a solid decade (2000-2002 era) to find a similar season.

What are the chances they all would lose in the same week?
That fact of the week may not be as impressive as it sounds when you consider one of these four quarterbacks is usually on a quest to perfection late into the season, or missed an entire season with injury (Tom Brady in 2008; Peyton Manning in 2011).

But Sunday marked the 73rd time all four played in the same NFL week, and the first time they went 0-4. It was the 58th time they all played without playing each other, so the real number to admire is one 0-4 week in 58 opportunities.

Maybe even just as crazy is that Week 2 was the first time they combined to go 1-3; their first losing week ever. The last time all four of their teams, with or without them starting, lost in the same week was another Week 3, back in the 2008 season. That day Rodgers also suffered his first loss as a starter against Dallas.

The 2004 season makes for a good bookmark in NFL history, as it was the year a lot of history-shaping events happened at the quarterback position.

Here is the breakdown of how the four have done in the 73 weeks they all played (since 2004).

Record Occurrences
4-0 16
3-1 34
3-1 (only loss to each other) 9
2-2 21
1-3 1 (Week 2, 2012)
0-4 1 (Week 3, 2012)

That season was when Manning took his game to an unprecedented level with 49 touchdown passes and a 121.1 passer rating. Brady had a breakout year statistically and won his third Super Bowl in four seasons. Brees finally rewarded San Diego with a career season to start an eight-year run of dominant play. Roethlisberger rewrote both the record books and expectations as the Steelers' rookie quarterback.

With respect to Rodgers and Eli Manning, these four have been the NFL?s gold standard at quarterback the last eight years, as no one else has the long track record of both individual and team success. Either Brady, Manning or Roethlisberger has represented the AFC in the Super Bowl in nine straight seasons. Losing streaks are not common for these four, but historic winning streaks are.

Roethlisberger became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a 13-0 record in the regular season, and he did it as a rookie in 2004. Peyton Manning did the same a year later; starting 13-0 with the 2005 Indianapolis Colts (finished 14-2). Brady achieved the only 16-0 regular season in NFL history with the 2007 New England Patriots. While Manning did it again in 2009 with a 14-0 start, Brees was right there with a 13-0 start for the New Orleans Saints (finished 13-3), which would lead to a Saints? Super Bowl victory.

Rodgers became the fifth quarterback to post a 13-0 regular season record last year (finished 14-1). Currently, Rodgers is suffering the greatest scoring drought of his career. Excluding return scores, the Packers have been held to 12, 16 and 16 points in their three games this season. They also scored only 20 points in their playoff loss to the Giants, putting Rodgers at 1-3 in his last four starts.

Since the other four quarterbacks ended their last season (2010 for Manning) with a playoff loss as well, you have some really bad records in the last few games.

What is going wrong this season?
Each of the four quarterbacks has faced a different situation that has led to their losing start.

Manning has likely faced the toughest start of the four quarterbacks. Not only has he had to deal with adjusting to a whole new team, but there is the physical recovery from the neck surgeries, and it is debatable just how healthy Manning is at this point.

On the field, the Broncos won a thrilling game over Pittsburgh in Week 1, but have dropped consecutive games to two 3-0 teams in Atlanta and Houston. After trailing by 20 points in the fourth quarter of each, Manning led a late rally, but the defense was unable to get the ball back for a legit opportunity at a winning touchdown.

The Broncos are a work in progress, but more rehab to get healthier and better timing with his receivers could help Manning get back to his usual standards. He had a slow start before, recovering after injury in 2008 that led to a 3-4 start before reeling off nine straight wins.

When you consider the 40-point scoring differential the Falcons and Texans each had in their other two wins this season, Denver?s 1-2 record with a pair of six-point losses does not look as bad. However, the schedule is still filled with challenges.

Brady could be sitting at 3-0 had field-goal attempts gone a little differently at the end of the game the last two weeks. First it was New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski missing on a 42-yard attempt that would have beat Arizona in Week 2, but he was wide left. It was the first failed clutch field goal in a loss for the Patriots since Dec. 26, 1999.

This time it was a blown 9-point lead in Baltimore in the fourth quarter. Brady was unsuccessful on the Patriots? last two drives, while the Ravens drove for the game-winning score. Rookie kicker Justin Tucker did not pull a Billy Cundiff this time, but he did barely make the 27-yard field goal with no time left.

Brady is trying to adjust to life without tight end Aaron Hernandez for the time being, and implementing vertical receiver Brandon Lloyd into an offense that's not known to stretch the field. Brady has been sacked seven times, and is on pace for his highest sack total since his first year as starter (41 times in 2001). The added pressure may explain why Brady has not looked as sharp this season.

The best news for New England is that they still play in the AFC East, and are the best team in the division. They have a good shot to notch a win over Buffalo this week, and now the New York Jets will be without Darrelle Revis the rest of the season. This is still New England?s division, even if they are under .500 for the first time in 145 games, snapping that impressive NFL record.

Brees is in a world of trouble at 0-3, and not playing like the prolific quarterback we are so used to seeing in New Orleans since 2006. While the suspension of head coach Sean Payton is a real problem, there is no excuse for Brees to rank 26th in completion percentage (54.7 percent), 27th in yards per attempt (6.60), and 25th in passer rating (77.0).

Brees should be able to wear a blindfold and still hit 60 percent of his passes in this offense, which he knows so well. New Orleans has major problems defensively, but the offense has not met its standard in any of the three games.

Brees struggled against a Washington defense that has been shredded by Sam Bradford and Andy Dalton. He threw a poor interception when he had a chance to tie the game late, and had a rookie-esque pick six against Carolina that contributed to the Week 2 loss.
