Quite a few folks have seen many of the apps they paid cold, hard cash for have disappeared from their list of purchases after Google rebranded Android Market as the Play Store. We haven't had the problem ourselves, but according to a litany of posts on the XDA-Developers forums, there are plenty of you out there who have. In addition to disappearing from the list of purchases, the afflicted apps apparently give users an error message when attempting to access them directly. Rest assured, the folks in Mountain View are aware of the problem and are "looking into the issue" according to the company's Known Issues page -- though curiously it's filed it under "Recently Fixed" despite its ongoing nature. 4 Reasons GM is Investing in Car-Sharing

Corporate America is joining the access economy. You can already see signs of this trend with companies like Hertz, BMW, Ford and GM partnering with collaborative consumption companies, or even start a sharing service of their own.? BMW, as we learned at SXSW has partnered with?ParkAtMyHouse.com, Ford partners with Zipcar, Hertz started its own car sharing service ? Hertz on Demand, and GM has invested in RelayRides. It?s interesting to see the growing level of interest of large corporations in the sharing space, which sometimes seems to be at odds with the economic model their sales are based on. Take for example the case of GM.

Unlike BMW, Ford or Hertz, GM invested in a company that connects people who need a car with vehicle owners. In other words, RelayRides creates a peer-to-peer market that maximizes the utilization of existing cars, hence reducing the need to add more cars. Now, not only did GM invest an undisclosed amount in RelayRides, but its OnStar division is also working with RelayRides to make the matching between owners and lenders easier. The concept, according to RelayRides, is that any GM car owner who lists his car on the RelayRides marketplace can link his OnStar and RelayRides accounts. This allows a borrower to reserve and unlock a GM car with nothing more than a mobile phone.

In all, it looks like GM is playing an important role in the growth of RelayRides, which announced earlier this month that it is expanding its service nationwide. And the question that comes to mind is why would GM do this? Did the company forget it makes money from selling more cars, not less?

Here are four possible explanations:

?1. Marketing, marketing, marketing!

Why 3 times marketing? Because the partnership with RelayRides is a marketing tool to reach 3 different audiences, especially now that OnStar is getting into the picture.

First, you?ll probably see more GM owners offering their cars through RelayRides, especially as RelayRides, according to Forbes, plans to advertise its services to the 6 million GM car owners who subscribe to GM?s OnStar. This is a great way to remind current GM car owners of yet another advantage of being a GM car owner ? the potential to make some extra cash from your car easily and safely with OnStar.

Second, since more GM owners will join the program, RelayRides? lenders will probably use cars made by GM more frequently than other cars. Basically, it means they?re getting a test drive in GM?s new models, getting to try both the cars and the OnStar system. As Shelby Clark, founder and Chief Community Officer at RelayRides put it: ?Consumers tend to buy cars they are familiar with, so if GM can get consumers driving and loving GM cars, they will be more likely to buy a GM car if and when they do purchase a car.?

Third, it can be a way to reach other potential customers, not necessarily customers of RelayRides, but folks who hear the media stories about RelayRides, or learn about it from a neighbor who rents cars through the service. I, for example, heard about OnStar for the first time only when I read about RelayRides. It doesn?t mean I?ll buy a GM model, but at least I?m aware now of a benefit GM cars provide I wasn?t aware of before.

2. The cool factor

The Volt hasn?t become a status symbol yet , so GM is certainly looking for other things that will help improve its image. Tapping into the access economy could give the company a much-needed boost. After all, is there anything trendier or cooler right now more than the sharing space? ?When GM is taking a leading role in RelayRides, it definitely helps to boost its image with age groups like the Millennials that are very enthusiastic about the access economy. Just think about SXSW ? although GM was a major sponsor of the conference, their RelayRides association added much needed cachet.

3. Good investment

There?s a good chance RelayRides will become a good investment. The car sharing industry is expanding rapidly, exhibiting 44% annual growt. ?A 2010 study by Frost and Sullivan projects that?car-sharing revenue in North America alone will exceed $3B annually by 2016, serving 4.4M members. As Forbes mentions, car sharing is a highly capital intensive business in which fleet costs constitute the biggest expense. A company like RelayRides has no fleet and therefore a substantial competitive advantage in this market. Don?t be surprised if GM will help RelayRides to leverage this advantage, leading the company eventually to IPO, just like Zipcar, which enjoyed a successful IPO last year.

4. Joining the revolution

If you can?t beat them, join them. GM?s head of business development initiatives, Bob Tiderington, was very clear about adopting this motto: ?We could stand on the sidelines and watch or we could choose to participate and try to make it into a favorable business model, which in this particular case, we have.?RelayRides? founder Clark added: ?One could argue that carsharing is disrupting GM?s core business, and instead of fighting the disruption, GM is participating in the disruption, and helping to shape the conversation in a way that will ultimately help its business.? If this revolution will succeed, it will certainly benefit those who were part of its avant-garde. Even GM.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A teenager who's campaigning to make it easier for children to see an upcoming documentary about bullying, the producers of the NBC musical drama "Smash" and Lady Gaga were among the winners of Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation media awards announced Saturday.

ABC's "Dancing With The Stars," the popular Spanish-language TV programs "Caso Cerrado" and "Primer Impacto," and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner's recent work "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures" also were among the honorees recognized at a ceremony in New York. GLAAD is set to present more awards in Los Angeles in April and San Francisco in June.

The awards are designed to honor fair, accurate and inclusive representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Katy Butler, a 17-year-old from Ann Arbor, Mich., got a special award for gathering more than 400,000 signatures on an online petition pressing the Motion Picture Association of America to lower its R rating for "Bully," a documentary set for release Friday. The MPAA has said language used in the film warrants restricting children under 17 from seeing it without an adult.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were honored for their careers, which include producing "Smash" and the films "Hairspray" and "Chicago."

Among awards for specific works, "Pariah," writer-director Dee Rees' movie about an African-American teenager struggling to come out as a lesbian, was named the outstanding limited-release film. Ricky Martin, The New York Times and a Boston Globe story about a transgender teenager and her identical twin brother, written by Bella English, also got laurels in various categories.

Honors for Spanish-language work included awards for episodes of "Caso Cerrado" and "Primer Impacto" and for a story, by Claudia Torrens of The Associated Press, about a Hispanic gay couple planning to marry and become fathers of twins, with the help of a surrogate mother.

A novel concept is marrying budget-conscious travelers to the nation with hungry-for-English yuppie Chinese. Shi Yingying reportsWhen 22-year-old Ammon Cunningham and his wife Marissa from Utah's Salt Lake City decided to visit Shanghai in the middle of June, accommodation was the last thing on their mind, despite it being peak time for hotel occupancy, thanks to the on-going Expo. The young couple had arranged to stay in a 140-square-meter apartment in Putuo district for free, in exchange for English conversation everyday with their hosts - 18-year-old Wu Siwei and his mother, Jin Yujun.This was made possible by a non-profit Chinese organization called Tourboarding, which offers a virtual platform for free lodging in Chinese homes in exchange for English tutoring. Guests are required to speak at least two hours of English every day in return for their stay, giving their Chinese hosts the chance to learn from a resident live-in English teacher for free - lessons that can otherwise costs 200-350 yuan ($30-50) an hour, and even more than 1,000 yuan an hour at some training institutions."I think it is very nice to actually be this close to the local culture," says Ammon. "We would like to not only visit tourist spots, but also see how a Chinese family lives, what their customs are like, and what's their favorite television show."Although Ammon's company in the US would have covered his cost of accommodation as one of the aims of his 15-day trip is to expand business with the Shanghai branch of Gymboree (an early childhood education company), the young man chose the Shanghai family over a star hotel.He chanced on the Tourboarding website while "looking for information on Chinese culture and what's okay to do"."I thought this might be fun to try," says Ammon. "So we contacted Wu's mother and the rest is history."Wu, a recent high school graduate, was most excited when he heard that two English-speaking foreigners would be staying at his home. The teenager is currently preparing for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for his future plans to study in the US."Unlike the formal teaching in my school, the conversations I have with Ammon and Marissa are more like everyday conversations between friends," Wu says."To spend more time with them, I show them around Shanghai and that means far more than two hours of English every day."Ammon says they talk about diverse topics. "I think that's really good as in China, students usually memorize everything so they can clear a test. This kind of conversation is a lot more difficult for them."As to suitable US universities for Wu, Ammon's 20-year-old wife Marissa, who is still in her last year at university says, "I'd definitely encourage him to go to the University of Utah. It is very famous and near our city."Marissa says the biggest cultural shock for her is the lack of personal space. "Here in China people are always right next to each other, but in the US, everyone tries to keep away as much as possible.However, the couple have their own separate bedroom and bathroom in Wu's house."Our bedroom is done up in the Japanese tatami style, while the living room is decorated with traditional Chinese calligraphy, and that's cool," says Marissa.The Cunninghams usually have their breakfast and dinner "at home", talk to the family in English and spend the day either traveling or working."We even did dumpling together once with Wu and his mother," says Ammon who first picked this up from his father who lived for a while in Taiwan and is good at Chinese cuisine. "We're grateful for the treat and are thinking of preparing an American-style breakfast for them before leaving."The most interactive moments between the American couple and their Chinese hosts come after dinner, when they either watch the popular TV matchmaking show If You Are the One (Fei Cheng Wu Rao), play the card game, Beat the Landlord, or Chinese chess. "It (the show) is so funny," says Ammon.Wu says his mom Jin loves to try new things and her English is so good that she could communicate with the Cunninghams without any problem.But doesn't Jin worry about their safety with two complete strangers in the house?"Shanghai is my city, even if anything goes wrong, they will be more afraid than us," says Jin. "However, I have no concerns, the Cunninghams seem nice and friendly."Tourboarding is the brainchild of an intrepid backpacker, 38-year-old Ken Chen. He says he found that 80 percent of tourists to China come as part of tour groups, while the comparative figure for Europe and America is 30 percent."That's when I came up with the idea of accommodating backpackers with ordinary Chinese families," says Chen, adding that the English tutoring is tailor-made for the Chinese.Chen quit his job at Nike Sports China and joined forces with Nuno Zhang, 28, a former Google employee and a few expats to launch Tourboarding in April.Their research showed that about 130 million Chinese fall in the 18-40 age group - their target host families - who are open to foreign cultures and eager to learn English. About 47 percent have evinced interest in the Tourboarding concept and 21 percent are willing to give it a try."In the past two months, more than 10,000 users have signed up on our website," says Chen. "We are especially popular in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Our overseas promotion now extends from English-speaking countries to Europeans and Japan."According to Chen, most Chinese families interested in the program are those with children. "But they are also those with apartments that are big enough. Even some of young white collar workers are interested in Tourboarding, although they might still be renting their apartment and are not allowed to bring strangers home."Spurred by the enthusiasm for Tourboarding, Chen is also thinking about building a "foreigners' city"."Why should we not bring an English-speaking environment to China?" he asks."We can build a mini-city peopled with foreign backpackers who can be encouraged to live like they do in their home countries. English will be the only language of communication"The Chinese can visit this 'city' and quickly improve their language skills," he says. Artist admits to shortcuts in show about Apple

CHICAGO (AP) ? An artist admitted Friday to taking shortcuts in crafting an often harrowing tale about Apple Inc.'s operations in China after the veracity of his one-man theatrical show was challenged by a public radio program that had based a broadcast on his work.

But writer Mike Daisey said he stands by his monologue and called what he does theater, and not journalism.

"It uses a combination of fact, memoir, and dramatic license to tell its story, and I believe it does so with integrity," Daisey said in a statement posted on his website.

Citing what he called "numerous fabrications," Ira Glass, the host of the popular public radio show "This American Life," said he could not vouch for the truth of a Jan. 6 broadcast excerpted from Daisey's critically acclaimed one-man show "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs."

Later Friday, The New York Times said it had removed a questionable paragraph from the online archive of an op-ed piece Daisey wrote for the newspaper in October.

Daisey also twisted the truth about his time in China during an interview with The Associated Press late last year. Paul Colford, a spokesman for the news cooperative, said the AP was reviewing its coverage of Daisey to determine what corrections will be necessary.

In his monologue performance, which currently running at the Public Theater in New York, Daisey describes meeting very young workers who put in very long hours and were forced to do crippling, repetitive motions at factories that make Apple products in China. Some he claimed had been poisoned by a chemical called hexane.

But "This American Life" says a China correspondent for the public radio show "Marketplace" named Rob Schmitz located and interviewed Daisey's Chinese interpreter, who disputed much of the artist's claims.

Daisey, in an interview with Glass broadcast as part of Friday's episode of "The American Life," admitted that he didn't meet any poisoned workers and guessed at the ages of some of the workers he met.

"This American Life" said in its statement that staffers asked Daisey for his interpreter's contact information while fact-checking the story. Daisey replied the cellphone number he had for her didn't work anymore and he had no way to reach her.

"At that point, we should've killed the story," Glass said. "But other things Daisey told us about Apple's operations in China checked out, and we saw no reason to doubt him."

Apple has been rebutting Daisey's allegations for months, to little effect. The Times also wrote an investigative series in January on dangerous working and living conditions for people who make Apple products in China, including explosions inside factories making iPads where four people were killed and 77 were injured.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment Friday. Daisey spokesman Philip Rinaldi said Friday his client was "not speaking to anyone about this right now."

The original "This American Life" episode, "Mr. Daisey and the Apple Factory," has become the most popular podcast in the history of "This American Life" with nearly 890,000 downloads.

Daisey also claimed in an interview with AP late last year that he met Chinese workers whose joints in their hands had disintegrated because they were doing the same motion hundreds of thousands of times.

"I know that people in charge know about these things and chose not to address them. And that's hard to swallow when you see the damage it does and you know how little it would take to ameliorate a high degree of human suffering," he said then.

The Times, which published Daisey's op-ed piece following Steve Jobs' death in early October, removed a paragraph from the online version that discussed conditions at Apple's factory in China. The newspaper posted an editor's note warning readers that the section had been removed because "questions have been raised about the truth."

"The rest of the piece is his opinion as a performer and a thinker," said Eileen Murphy, a Times' spokeswoman. "If this were a news story it would be a different situation. It's not. It's an op-ed."

In his original monologue, Daisey splices Jobs career milestones and the transformation of Apple from a David into a Goliath with more personal stories about his own connection to the computer maker.

He has said that when he saw four photos posted online taken by workers at a Chinese factory to test the iPhone but mistakenly not erased, he suddenly realized people, not robots, were putting the sleek devices together.

In interviews and on stage, Daisey has said he traveled to the Chinese industrial zone of Shenzhen and interviewed hundreds of workers from Foxconn Technology Group, the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer, who suffered from their work.

"It's like carpal tunnel on a scale we can scarcely imagine," he said while performing the show in New York in October.

In this weekend's "This American Life," Daisey tells Glass he felt conflicted about presenting things that he knew weren't true. But he said he felt "trapped" and was afraid people would no longer care about the abuses at the factories if he didn't present things in a dramatic way.

"I'm not going to say that I didn't take a few shortcuts in my passion to be heard," he tells Glass.

Daisey has performed the monologue for some 50,000 people from Seattle to Washington, D.C., and it is now at The Public Theater until Sunday. Daisey was expected to take the show on tour, but its future is now in doubt.

In a statement, The Public Theater said the show would be performed in New York as scheduled and stood by what it called "a powerful work of art."

"Mike is an artist, not a journalist," the statement said. "Nevertheless, we wish he had been more precise with us and our audiences about what was and wasn't his personal experience in the piece."

Cyclone Lua strengthens, approaches Northwest Australia

PERTH (Reuters) - Tropical Cyclone Lua hurtled toward Australia's northwest coast on Thursday, strengthening into a Category 2 cyclone by early morning and prompting the shutdown of several oil fields and Port Hedland, one of the world's largest iron ore export ports.

Heavy rainfall is forecast in sparsely populated coastal areas on Thursday and Friday, with the cyclone expected to intensify and make landfall on Saturday morning, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

The storm is expected to strengthen to Category 3 by Thursday evening and continue southeast towards the coast, home to Australia's largest iron ore port as well as several oil and gas facilities, and to intensify to a Category 4 cyclone on Saturday morning, the weather bureau said.

Category 4 is the second most severe on the Australian scale and means sustained winds are expected with speeds of 160-200 km per hour (100-124 miles per hour) and gusts up to 279 kph (173 mph).

Lua is bearing down on Australia's iron ore-rich Pilbara mining region and Port Hedland, which exports about 250 million tonnes of iron ore per year and is preparing to shut down on Friday morning, a port official said.

"We'll close it when the last ship departs and that will be tomorrow," harbor master John Finch said.

Miners Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, which have major iron ore operations in the area, said they are monitoring the storm.

Chevron said on Thursday it was evacuating non-essential personnel from Barrow Island, located 70 km (44 miles) off northwestern Australia, where the company operates oil production facilities and is constructing the Gorgon liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The company said it is also evacuating personnel related to its Wheatstone LNG project near the coastal town of Onslow.

Cyclones are a regular occurrence during Australian summers and can often force offshore oil and gas platforms to suspend operations and mobile marine units to seek safe harbors until the storm passes.

On Wednesday, Woodside Petroleum and Apache Corp shut several of their oil fields off Australia's northwest coast as Lua approached.

Australia's Woodside halted production at six oil fields, including its Vincent and Enfield oil fields and the Cossack, Wanaea, Lambert and Hermes oil fields on the North West Shelf, the company said.

Apache Corp shut oil production at its Stag field and was evacuating non-essential personnel from its Varanus Island natural gas processing facility.

Woodside's Vincent produces an average of around 24,250 barrels per day (bpd) and Enfield 11,770 bpd, while the company's North West Shelf fields produce around 5,500 bpd, according to the latest production report. Apache's Stag oil field produces about 8,800 barrels of oil per day.

The cyclone season off Australia's northwest typically runs from November to April.

Syrian President Bashar Assad took advice from Iran on how to handle the uprising against his rule, according to several thousand emails apparently received and sent by the Syrian leader and his wife, the Guardian newspaper of London reported Wednesday.

Assad also received details about Western journalists in Homs and was urged to "tighten the security grip" on the opposition-held city in November, The Guardian said, citing more than 3,000 emails that activists shared with the newspaper after downloading them from private accounts belonging to Assad and his wife, Asma.

The messages were intercepted by members of the opposition Supreme Council of the Revolution group between June and early February, the Guardian said.

The documents emerged on the eve of the rebellion?s first anniversary, a day that also saw Saudi Arabia close its embassy in Damascus and ahead of a United Nations briefing by crisis envoy Kofi Annan, who completed a peace mission to Syria to end violence that has already cost 8,000 lives.

The email messages appear to show Asma spending thousands of dollars over the internet for designer goods such as candlesticks, tables and chandeliers while Assad swapped entertaining internet links on his iPad and downloaded music from iTunes.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and President Barack Obama say that there should be a political solution to the violent upheaval in Syria.

The Guardian said it tried to authenticate the emails but could not verify every one.

The emails, according to the Guardian, also appear to show:

? Assad established a network of trusted aides who reported directly to him through his "private" email account ? bypassing both his powerful clan and the country's security apparatus.

? Assad made light of reforms he had promised in an attempt to defuse the crisis, referring to "rubbish laws of parties, elections, media".

? A daughter of the emir of Qatar, Hamid bin Khalifa al-Thani, this year advised Assad and his wife to leave Syria and suggested Doha may offer them exile.

? Assad sidestepped extensive U.S. sanctions against him by using a third party with a U.S. address to make purchases of music and apps from Apple's iTunes.

? A Dubai-based company, al-Shahba, with a registered office in London is used as a key conduit for Syrian government business and private purchases by the Syrian first lady.

The emails appear to show that Assad received advice from Iran or its proxies ahead of a speech in December, the Guardian said. His media consultant prepared a long list of themes, reporting that the advice was based on "consultations with a good number of people in addition to the media and political adviser for the Iranian ambassador."

The memo advised the president to use "powerful and violent" language and to show appreciation for support from "friendly states," the Guardian said.

- Annan, will brief the U.N. Security Council on Friday about his peace mission, which diplomats say could breathe new life into stalled talks on a resolution aimed at ending the escalating violence. Council diplomats say Annan'sassessment of the crisis will be crucial to a bid by the United States and its European allies to pass a resolution that would also ensure humanitarian aid workers have access to besieged towns.
- Saudi Arabia said on Wednesday that it had closed its embassy in Syria and withdrawn all diplomats and staff, the Saudi Press Agency reported. A Foreign Ministry statement said the decision was made "in light of the current events in Syria." Several Arab and Western countries have scaled down their diplomatic presence in Syria where President Bashar al-Assad is fighting a year-long revolt against his rule.

Hiding emotions may exacerbate depression among black men who confront racial discrimination

Enduring subtle, insidious acts of racial discrimination is enough to depress anyone, but African-American men who believe that they should respond to stress with stoicism and emotional control experience more depression symptoms, according to new findings from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The study, "Taking It Like a Man: Masculine Role Norms as Moderators of the Racial DiscriminationDepressive Symptoms Association Among African-American Men," was published online March 8, 2012, in the American Journal of Public Health.

"We know that traditional role expectations are that men will restrict their emotions or 'take stress like a man,'" said study author Wizdom Powell Hammond, Ph.D., assistant professor of health behavior in UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health. "However, the more tightly some men cling to these traditional role norms, the more likely they are to be depressed.

"It also is clear that adherence to traditional role norms is not always harmful to men," Hammond said. "But we don't know a lot about how these norms shape how African-American men confront stressors, especially those that are race-related."

Hammond studied the phenomenon researchers call everyday racism, which is marked not so much by magnitude or how egregious the prejudice and torment were, but by persistence and subtlety.

"It chips away at people's sense of humanity and very likely at their hope and optimism," Hammond said. "We know these daily hassles have consequences for men's mental health, but we don't know why some men experience depression while others do not."

Hammond studied data collected from surveys of 674 African-American men, aged 18 and older, carried out at barber shops in four U.S. regions between 2003 and 2010.

She found that everyday racial discrimination was associated with depression across all age groups. Younger men (aged under 40) were more depressed, experienced more discrimination and had a stronger allegiance to norms encouraging them to restrict their emotions than men over 40 years old. Furthermore, some men who embraced norms encouraging more self-reliance reported less depression.

The results showed associations, not necessarily causation, Hammond noted.

The data also showed that when men felt strongly about the need to shut down their emotions, then the negative effect of discrimination on their mental health was amplified. The association was particularly apparent for men aged 30 years and older.

"It seems as though there may be a cumulative burden or long-term consequences of suffering such persistent discriminatory slights and hassles in silence," Hammond said. "Our next task is to determine when embracing traditional role norms are harmful or helpful to African American men's mental health."

The information will help target future interventions to subgroups of men, rather than try to reach all men with one general approach.

"African-American men are not all alike, just as all people in any group are not alike," Hammond said. "The way they feel, respond and react changes over time as they normally develop. The slings and arrows of everyday racism still exist, and we need to find targeted ways to help men defend against them while also working to address the policy structures that project them."

Currently, Hammond is part of the 2011-2012 class of White House Fellows. Founded in 1964, the leadership and public service program offers fellows a first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the federal government.

Hammond also is a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
