Volvo Cars is a premium global car manufacturer recognized for its innovative safety systems and unique designs. Volvo was written into the original books that became the Twilight franchise, so there was a natural marketing partnership for movie releases. As part of the latest movie, Eclipse, Volvo wanted to create a virtual world resembling the Twilight story where users from around the globe could participate in a chance to win a new Volvo XC 60. However, the existing technology infrastructure could not provide the scalability or level of security required. After consulting with Microsoft Gold Certified Partner LBI and evaluating other cloud services, Volvo selected the Windows Azure platform. Volvo has now successfully delivered an exciting, secure online gaming experience that scaled to meet demand and had a rapid time to market, all at a fraction of the previously expected costs. Madonna Drops New Single 'Girl Gone Wild'

Pop icon's inner dance-floor vixen comes out on second MDNA single.

Madonna kicked the party off with "Give Me All Your Luvin', " and she's keeping it going with her second MDNA single, "Girl Gone Wild." The thumping song, released Monday (February 27), proves that this era of Madonna will certainly be focused on pumping out dance-floor anthems.

"Girl Gone Wild" is all about the heat of letting loose and dancing, certainly themes that Madge fans will find familiar. Produced by Benny Benassi, the track, though fun and funky, is a bit darker than her first single, which seemed to pay homage to the '80s version of the pop icon in its bright nature.

"I got that burnin' hot desire/ And no one can put out my fire/ It's coming right down through the wire/ Here it comes/ When I hear them 808 drums/ It's got me singing," she proclaims on the catchy, sing-along chorus. "Hey, ey, ey, ey/ Like a girl gone wild/ A good girl gone wild/ I'm like, hey, ey, ey, ey/ Like a girl gone wild/ A good girl gone wild."

The song chugs along thanks to more dance-floor confessions from the singer, which include, "The room is spinning/ It must be the Tanqueray/ I'm about to go astray/ My inhibition's gone away/ I feel like sinning/ You got me in the zone/ DJ play my favorite song/ Turn me on."

The video was shot earlier this month and was directed by fashion photographers Mert and Marcus, who also shot the colorful artwork for the album. It had been rumored that Britney Spears would be featured on the track, but that rumor was shot down by Madonna herself.

MDNA will drop on March 26. It features production from collaborators like Martin Solveig and William Orbit, Demolition Crew, Alessandro "Alle" Benassi, Hardy "Indiigo" Muanza and Michael Malih.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) officially announced at MWC, 3.1 extra inches of Ice Cream Sandwich

We already saw Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) just over a week ago, and now the company has come clean with its 10.1-inch variant (along with a new Galaxy Beam smartphone). Aside from bumping up the screen resolution of its LCD to 1280 x 800, from 1024 x 600 on the 7.0, the 10.1 features the same 1Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity, front and rear cameras (VGA and 3-megapixels, respectively) and 21Mbps HSPA+ connectivity if you opt for the 3G model instead of WiFi. The 10.1-incher notably comes equipped with a 7,000 mAh battery (up from 4,000 on the 7.0), which will hopefully ensure stamina that's similar to its predecessor. The slate is unsurprisingly loaded with TouchWiz-flavored Ice Cream Sandwich, and will be offered in 16 and 32GB models (expandable by up to 32GB if you supply your own microSD card). There's no word on pricing just yet, but Sammy plans to start selling all 10.1-inches of this treat during March in the UK -- and you can bet we'll get our own in-person hands-on while we're traversing the show floor here at MWC. For now, you'll find full details about the slate in the press release after the break and press images in the gallery below.

Intersecting with pre-modern and post-modern modes of being-in-time, modern Buddhisms have emerged in traditionally Buddhist spaces and in new cultural contexts. In traditionally Buddhist countries, Buddhist modernity expresses itself in juncture with the emergence of (post)colonialist subjectivity, for example, in lay mass meditation movements; charismatic reform movements; Socially Engaged Buddhism(s); nun and female monastic revival. In the "West", Buddhism was discovered and reinvented as spiritual science and spiritual psychotherapy, while modernity sparked also the commodification of Buddhist practices within the late-capitalist, neo-liberal global village. 'Global Buddhisms' are ever adapting to the challenges and opportunities of what Z. Bauman has termed 'liquid modernity'. For the 6th International Lay Buddhist Forum, we invite presenters from both Buddhist and academic communities to discuss modern challenges and opportunities for global Lay Buddhism. Papers should address the Forum's theme, "Lay Buddhism in the Modern World". In particular we invite contributions regarding - Lay Buddhism, Science and Psychotherapy - Lay Buddhism and Globalisation - Lay Buddhism and Reform in Buddhist Asia Abstract deadline: 1 May 2012. Full paper/poster deadline: 15 September 2012. Acceptance of participation is conditional until full papers/posters are received. Submit your abstract at https://ilbf2012.itas-uni.eu/ <https://owa.canterbury.ac.uk/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=https://ilbf2012.itas-uni.eu/> In case of further questions email: ilbf2012@itas-uni.eu <mailto:ilbf2012@itas-uni.eu> Cost Accepted participants will be provided with free accommodation, board and conference transportation, sponsored by the Lay Buddhist Retreat Centre, Karma Guen (www.karmaguen.org/). Flights to/from Malaga (AGP) need to be covered by the participants themselves. Stipends There is a small amount of travel stipends of not more than 500 Euro for young and emerging Buddhist leaders and scholars from outside Europe. Applicants for these stipends are expected to find matching funding from their Buddhist or academic home organisations. If you would like to be considered for a travel stipend please include a 200 word reflection about yourself with your application form and paper abstract and provide information about matching funding sought from your own organisation. Preliminary Programme 30 Oct: Arrival 31 Oct-2 Nov: Conference 3-4 Nov: Temple stay and sightseeing About the ILBF The International Lay Buddhist Forum is an independent lay Buddhist movement that is all-inclusive in membership and outlook. Any lay or ordained individuals or members of lay or monastic organizations who are supportive of lay Buddhist development and interaction of lay and monastic members are welcome. The movement aims to represent and further the interests and roles of lay Buddhists in the development of Buddhism in modern day world. Background The International Lay Buddhist Forum began as a lay Buddhist movement at the first world Lay Buddhist Forum, held in Seoul in 2007. The forum was hosted by the Chongji Order with the support of the Association of Korean Buddhist Orders. Similar events have been held annually since then. The annual event has been attended by lay Buddhists and monastics from various countries in Asia, Europe and North America. At each forum, participants voiced the need for the existence of a lay organisation to serve its interests, and play a role in a healthy development of Buddhism in the modern world. This voice became stronger, louder and clearer at each succeeding Lay Buddhist Forum. This gave rise to the idea of establishing an international lay Buddhist movement. Because of its international participation and global outlook, it needed to form an international structure. A temporary committee was set up in 2010 to help formalise the organisation and plan the growth and development of this international lay Buddhist movement. This committee met to adopt a constitution and elect officers on October 26, 2011. With the constitution adopted, a proper name for the organisation and a formal Steering Committee were established on the same day. The organisation is formally named the International Lay Buddhist Forum, or ILBF in short. Steering Committee The Steering Committee of ILBF consists of six persons: Chairperson: Dr. Jong-in Kim (South Korea); Vice Chairperson: Dr. Sue-Lian Bong (Malaysia); Secretary-Treasurer : Dr. Gene Reeves (Japan); Members: Dr. Franz Gschwind (Germany), Dr Christie Y-L Chang (Taiwan), Dr. Burkhard Scherer (UK); Honorary Chairperson: Dr. Hwaling Lee (South Korea) Guiding Philosophy of ILBF ILBF is a wholly independent lay Buddhist movement, representing the interests and roles of lay Buddhists and lay Buddhists only, not the lineages or traditions or orders or organisations of the members. While ILBF membership may include members from various Buddhist organisations, and its activities may be hosted and/or supported by particular organisations or individuals, ILBF is independent of them and does not represent their teachings or values. Previous Forums The first five Lay Buddhist Forums were held in Seoul, South Korea hosted by the Chongji Buddhist Order with support from the Association of Korean Buddhist Orders and the government of South Korea. Balmy English winter a boon to forest foragers

An unseasonably warm winter means an extended season for hunters of mushrooms and berries in England.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

An unusually mild winter in parts of England has meant an extended season for the country?s growing number of professional foragers.

Instead of shivering under frost and snow for long periods, some edible weeds, plants, berries, and mushrooms have continued to grow, allowing foragers like Fergus Drennan to gather produce for the table.

He has been foraging for nearly 20 years, and says the warmer temperatures had been a fillip compared with last year?s freezing weather, which was the worst in a generation.

?I can?t remember it being so mild, but I?m not complaining,? he says.

According to the national weather service, temperatures in central England averaged 43 degrees F. from Dec. 1 to mid-January, putting it on course to be one of the 10 mildest winters since records began 353 years ago.

There are no official figures on how many foragers are operating across England, but foraged food has become more popular among restaurant chefs. Mr. Drennan himself supplies restaurants and also holds courses on what to pick and what not to pick.

?Never eat anything unless you?re 100 percent sure [it is safe], otherwise you can get ill,? he says.

Drennan is careful not to overpick in an area and to gain permission from landowners if necessary.

?There are so many things to eat which we just ignore because we?re too used to supermarkets and modern living,? he says. ?This is nature?s larder.?

Israel: Thai bombs similar to those in India blast (AP)

BANGKOK ? Israeli officials ramped up accusations Wednesday that Iran was launching covert attack plots, saying "sticky" bombs found in a Thai house rented by Iranians were similar to devices used against Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the violence, while Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast called the allegations "baseless" and said Israel was trying to damage his country's relations with Thailand and fuel "conspiracy" theories.

Thailand's government was trying to determine what three Iranian men were plotting when a cache of explosives detonated accidentally in their home in Bangkok's busy Sukhumvit Road area a day earlier. Bomb disposal teams combed the Iranians' house again Wednesday looking for more evidence, while security forces were searching for an Iranian woman they said had originally rented it.

Two of the men were detained in Bangkok on Tuesday after fleeing the destroyed house, while a third was arrested Wednesday in neighboring Malaysia after boarding a flight from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur overnight.

Israel has accused Iran of waging a campaign of state terror and has threatened military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran has blamed the Jewish state for the recent killings of Iranian atomic scientists and has denied responsibility for all three plots this week.

On Monday in New Delhi, an explosion tore through an Israeli diplomatic vehicle, wounding the driver and a diplomat's wife, according to Indian officials. On the same day in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, authorities say attackers planted an explosive device on the car of a driver for the Israeli Embassy, but it was discovered and defused before it went off.

"If this aggression isn't halted, ultimately it will spread to many other countries," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in Israel's parliament Wednesday.

He convened his Security Cabinet to discuss terrorisms against Israel and "Iran's involvement in repeated attempts to attack Israeli targets," his office said.

Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Itzhak Shoham told The Associated Press in an interview that after Tuesday's blasts, Thai police found and defused two magnetic bombs that could be stuck on vehicles.

"They are similar to the ones used in Delhi and in Tbilisi," Shoham said. "From that we can assume that there is the same network of terror."

That and the arrest of the two Iranians in Thailand "again leaves not too much room to assume who was behind it," Shoham said.

Late Tuesday, Israel's Channel 10 TV quoted unidentified Thai authorities as saying the captured Iranians confessed to targeting Israeli interests.

However, Thai security officials told a news conference they had little information about who the alleged attackers were or their possible targets.

National Security Council chief Wichean Potephosree said the government had not yet determined if there was any link between the events in Bangkok, New Delhi and Tbilisi.

"We haven't found any links but we are still investigating," Wichean said. "We admit there was a magnetic component, aiming at individuals, but the origin of the magnets still has to be investigated."

Thai police have named the Iranians in custody here as Saeid Moradi, who lost at least one leg in a self-inflicted grenade blast as he tried to flee police, and Mohammad Kharzei, who was detained Tuesday as he tried to board a flight to Malaysia.

Both men are now facing four criminal charges, including possession of explosives, attempted murder, attempted murder of a policeman and causing explosions that damaged property.

Thai officials identified the third suspect as Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, and officials in Malaysia said he was arrested there Wednesday.

Malaysia federal police spokesman Ramli Yoosuf said Sadaghatzadeh was being investigated for terrorism-related activities linked to the Bangkok blasts, but could not say whether he would be extradited to Thailand.

At least five bombs were identified in Bangkok. The first blew off the roof of the men's house, and Moradi detonated two others ? one against a taxi when its driver refused to give him a ride, and another as he tried to fend off police. The taxi driver and three other Thais were wounded in the taxi blast.

When police searched the men's house, a bomb squad found and defused two explosives, each made of three or four pounds of C-4 explosives inside a pair of radios.

The type of explosives suggested they would have been used to target individuals, Wichean said. Police were tracing the materials to try to learn their origin.

"Based on the equipment and materials we found, they were aimed at individuals and the destruction capacity was not intended for large crowds or big buildings," Wichean said.

National police Chief Prewpan Dhamapong also said the target was "individuals. Like what happened in India." He declined to speculate on what the targets were, but said they were "foreigners, not Thais."

Wichean also acknowledged his nation could be "a weak link" for international terrorism "because we are open to foreigners."

Thailand itself has rarely been a target for international terrorists, but its main airport is a major hub for Asian air travel and its government ? heavily reliant on tourism ? is known for tolerance but criticized for corruption and graft.

The Difference Among Satellite Cell phones & Cell Phones : Guide ...

While discussing about satellites phones, of course we all have been aware of your technology especially those who currently subscribe to satellite tv for pc iridium phone.

Simply put, the best way satellite technological innovation functions is by having an world bound system (at home regarding television programming) which in turn can communicate with the satellite within outer space.

Television set stations that provides the television service will transfer their transmitted to a satellite in room (circulating the planet earth) and thereafter the satellite will transfer the transmitted to all satellite receiver system systems that is known including the kinds attached to each of our homes (normally in plate forms)

The satellites used for the purpose of tv set broadcasts these are known as communications satellite because of it?s capabilities to deliver sounds, info, video, and also graphics in one location to yet another location.

The type of communication utilized involves the utilization of a satellite capable of speaking, transmitting tv set broadcasts, stereo or whichever signal carried from the world bound satellite transmitter.

The first interaction satellite, Task SCORE, premiered on Eighteenth December 1958 to send a Christmas time announcement through President Eisenhower to everyone.

Important samples of satellite marketing communications during the Area race:

1962: Telstar: Transoceanic communications satellite.

1972: Anik A single: Canadian First communications satellite.

1974: Westar: American 1st marketing communications satellite.

1976: Marisat: Very first moving marketing communications satellite.

Apart from satellite television, one other popular use of satellite technology for the public is the satellite phone. It provides substantial coverage anywhere around the world be it at the heart of the Ocean or in your dense Amazon jungle.

Although it is expensive, your satellite phone is important to prospects who usually explore or even sail throughout the world as there are absolutely no normal telephones that has insurance coverage in private areas.

Satellite tv for pc telephones ended up first launched in the 1990?s. However, income were not excellent as a variety of problems ended up encountered by the satellite phone companies.

Nevertheless, the satellite telephone acquired lately improved popularity for example the Iridium satellite telephone happens to be utilizing 66 satellites because of its 100,500 clients. Additionally, Globalstar has registered 115,500 clients around the world.

Satellite phone, also known as ?Satphone? is really a mobile phone system that enables communication by means of communication satellite that movements around the planet?s orbit for worldwide telephone insurance coverage.

Many of the satellite phones utilize Low World Orbit (LEO) satellite, enabling the idea to provide a even more coverage and sound quality.

The main difference between a satellite telephone and a mobile phone (also referred to as a cellular phone) is that satellite phones transfer signals on the nearest satellite in space while the mobile phone transmits alerts to the local earth certain cellular community.

Satellite phones utilizes LEO?s to create a network which in turn allows a nearly global insurance coverage iridium satellite phone.

Some satellite phones employ geostationary orbiting satellite services which are usually situated between 30,400 kilometer and Forty-eight,280 kilometer from the planet?s surface.

However, as Capricorn satellites are positioned closer to our planet?s surface and it is network gives users using better tone of voice clarity when compared to the geostationary satellites situated further through the earth.

The transmission wait is around Zero.5 mere seconds thus giving Capricorn satellites a benefit in the form of tone of voice clarity and quality of conversation.

Drug halts organ damage in inflammatory genetic disorder, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Feb. 10, 2012) ? A new study shows that Kineret (anakinra), a medication approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, is effective in stopping the progression of organ damage in people with neonatal-onset multisystem inflammatory disease (NOMID). This rare and debilitating genetic disorder causes persistent inflammation and ongoing tissue damage.

The research was performed by scientists at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), part of the National Institutes of Health.

NOMID affects numerous organs and body systems, including the skin, joints, eyes, and central nervous system. The first sign of the disease is often a rash that develops within the first weeks of life. Other problems, including fever, meningitis, joint damage, vision and hearing loss, and mental retardation, can follow. Kineret, one of a relatively new class of drugs known as biologic response modifiers or biologics, blocks the activity of interleukin-1 (IL-1), a protein made by cells of the immune system. IL-1 is overproduced in NOMID and a number of other diseases, leading to damaging inflammation. Previous work by the same NIAMS group showed that blocking IL-1 was effective in relieving symptoms of NOMID. However, this is the first study to show that Kineret works over the long-term and, at higher doses, can also control damage that often results in vision and hearing loss, and brain lesions.

"Inflammation prolonged over many years will eventually cause irreversible damage and loss of function," said lead author Dr. Raphaela Goldbach-Mansky of the NIAMS Translational Autoinflammatory Disease Section.

For example, inflammation of the cochlea -- a tiny structure of the inner ear -- was found to be responsible for hearing loss in people with NOMID. Thinning of the optic nerve caused by inflammation-related pressure in the brain has been identified as a cause of vision loss.

"We knew we could effectively block inflammation in the inner ear and in the brain and eyes. The next step was to find out if we could sufficiently prevent the progression of hearing or vision loss," said Goldbach-Mansky.

The group sought the answers to their questions in the study published online in Arthritis & Rheumatism. Study participants, who ranged in age from 10 months to 42 years, were treated with daily doses of Kineret based on body weight -- 1 to 5 milligrams of Kineret per kilogram of body weight (1 to 5 mg/kg/day) -- for at least 36 months and as long as 60 months. Disease activity was monitored with blood tests to measure C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation in the body, and by daily diaries kept by the patients or their parents. The researchers also used sensitive MRI imaging methods to assess inflammation in the inner ear and brain.

Researchers found the initial Kineret doses used were insufficient to control organ inflammation, but by increasing the dose, they were able to do so. By preventing organ inflammation, scientists were able to preserve organ function in most patients. In addition, the scientists found ways to predict who is at greatest risk of hearing and vision loss.

"The few patients in the study who had hearing loss were also the ones who continued to have inflammation in the inner ear," said the study's first author Dr. Cailin H. Sibley. "We also found that people who had thin optic nerves when we assessed their vision were more likely to lose vision than those who had thick optic nerves, simply because they had already lost fibers due to untreated disease and, therefore, started with a huge disadvantage."

These findings point to the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to keep organ damage from developing. "We are continuing the study with an emphasis on enrolling very young children to prospectively show that we can prevent any organ damage from developing if we start treatment early in life," Goldbach-Mansky said.

Because IL-1 is needed to fight infections, there has been concern that blocking it with high doses of Kineret might leave the body vulnerable to infections. But overall, the study drug was well tolerated. "While we have seen infections in the study, none were serious enough to discontinue the drug, and all healed well with appropriate treatment."

While Kineret is not a cure for NOMID -- its effects last only as long as the drug is taken -- the study offers hope for people with the disease. "Without Kineret, people with NOMID are at risk of progressive organ damage that results in hearing and vision loss, cognitive impairment and, in many cases, early death. As many as 20 percent of children with this genetic disorder do not live to adulthood," said Goldbach-Mansky. "This study shows that treatment over five years is safe and effective, and can prevent organ damage."

In addition to funding from the NIAMS, portions of this work were also supported by the Intramural Research Programs of the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, the National Eye Institute, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and the NIH Clinical Center.

The end of the small brokerage firm

The era of the small brokerage firm is gradually coming to a close as several of the most well-regarded boutique brokers call it quits.

It's been over for the small broker-dealer model for awhile, but a hundred-year-old industry doesn't merely go away quietly and all at once.? There were companies manufacturing typewriters and word processors into the late 90's and I'm sure the toga weavers were hard at work for decades after the fall of the Roman Empire.

Skip to next paragraph Joshua M. Brown

Joshua has been managing money for high net worth clients, charitable foundations, corporations and retirement plans for more than a decade.

Recent posts

And so it goes here in the early dawn of 2012 as two of the most well-regarded boutique broker-dealers have been extinguished against the backdrop of a raging bull market for everyone else...

From CNNMoney:

The 2012 surge in the stock market hasn't been positive for everyone on Wall Street: Hundreds of small brokerage firms on death watch.

Trading volumes and commissions are at their lowest levels since 2007. And so far this year, three small but well-known brokerage firms have already had to call it quits.

The swift unwinding of WJB Capital Group, Ticonderoga Securities and Kaufman Brothers has left investors to wonder who's next. Representatives from WJB, Ticonderoga, and Kaufman did not return calls for comment.

Trading is now done at fractions of a penny, often with little or no research exchange between institutional brokers and their clients.? Buyside shops have brought research in-house at very little cost (unemployed analysts are practically swinging from the rafters here in NYC).? In addition, single stock selection has been de-emphasized a great deal as fund flows have turned from the open end actively managed fund complex to the passively managed ETF snackbar.? When the average holding time for a security is measured in water drips from a faucet, why should anyone bother to care about how this quarter's free cash flow stacks up against next quarter's estimate?

And if the research isn't generating trades, and the trades that are getting done are subject to commission deflation (2 cents a share!) and on top of all that the firms can't supplement by making markets at a decent margin thanks to decimilization - well, what exactly is it...ya do here?

There are 4066 smaller brokerage firms left.? I'm rooting for you guys, but it won't be easy.

Barclays slashes bonus pool after 2011 profit fall (AP)

LONDON ? Barclays PLC revealed Friday that it is slashing its bonus pool after earnings at its investment banking division fell sharply and dented overall profitability.

The bank said it was taking the action as it reported that its profit after taxes fell 15 percent last year to 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) from 3.56 billion pounds the year before even though income rose 2.6 percent to 33 billion pounds. Much of the profit decline was due to a 32 percent fall in pretax profit at the Barclays Capital investment banking unit to 2.97 billion pounds.

The bank said the average bonus for Barclays Capital employees will be 64,000 pounds ($101,000), down 30 percent from 2010. The total bonus pool was cut by 25 percent and the average bonus per employee will be 21 percent lower at 15,200 pounds.

"We need to balance remaining competitive with being responsive to the public mood," Chief Executive Bob Diamond told reporters after the publication of the results.

Bonuses are a highly sensitive political issue in Britain, particularly at Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group which were bailed out by taxpayers.

Lloyds chief executive Antonio Horta-Osorio and RBS CEO Stephen Hester have both waived their bonuses, though Hester did so only after coming under intense political pressure.

Barclays said bonuses for executive directors and the eight highest paid senior executive officers would be down 48 versus 2010 on a like-for-like basis. Diamond received a bonus in shares worth 1.8 million pounds last year.

Barclays said no one would get a cash bonus of more than 65,000 pounds.

A more detailed look at the results show that the bank's adjusted pretax profit of 5.6 billion pounds fell short of the consensus forecast of 5.8 billion pounds.

After initially opening lower, Barclays shares in London were trading 2.9 percent higher after an hour of trading.

Richard Hunter, analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers, said the initial sell-off appeared to respond to the disappointing top line results and that the upturn fed on more positive news within the earnings report.

Hunter noted a 48 percent gain in pretax profit in the retail and business banking, a return to profit in the corporate division, a 9 percent hike in the dividend to 6 pence and a "sturdy" Tier 1 capital ratio of 11 percent.

Barclays shares are now at their highest level since July. A year ago they were trading at about 330 pence but fell as low as 139 pence in September.

Scientists drill past Antarctic ice to reach buried lake. What lies beneath?

Lake Vostok has been capped with Antarctic ice for at least 15 million years. Now scientists have drilled 13,000 feet to reach its surface. They'll soon learn what life forms have adapted to that cold, dark locale.

From high atop an Antarctic ice sheet, Russian scientists appear to have opened a window on the possibility for life forms beneath the icy crusts ... or on Jupiter's moon Europa or on Saturn's moon Enceladus.

This week, researchers at the bottom of the world announced they had drilled through more than 13,000 feet of ice to reach the surface of Lake Vostok ? a body of water roughly the size of Lake Ontario. The lake has been capped with ice for the past 15 million to 25 million years.

With this week's development, ?we're one step closer to understanding subglacial lakes, and it's a pretty big step,? says Robin Bell, a senior scientist at Columbia University's Lamont-Dougherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y.

The breakthrough came toward the end of the research season in Antarctica. Scientists anticipate bringing up and analyzing the first samples from the lake next December.

For biologists, finding novel microbes in the lake's frigid water could shed more light on ways organisms adapt to extremely cold, lightless conditions ? conditions also thought to exist on Europa and Enceladus.

?There is no other place on Earth that has been in isolation for more then 20 million years. It's a meeting with the unknown,? said Lev Savatyugin, a researcher with Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, in an interview with the Associated Press in Moscow.

In addition, core samples pulled from the lake's bottom are expected to contain clues about broad changes in climate that turned the continent from what is thought to have been a thickly forested landscape to a barren, ice-encrusted one known for its record cold temperatures, wind speeds, and dryness.

With Lake Ontario's size, but more than three times its volume, Lake Vostock already has given researchers a better understanding of how ice sheets work, Dr. Bell says.

Studies show how the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, which flows downhill over the top of the lake, gains ice as some of the lake water freezes to the sheet's underside. Bell and colleagues found the same process at work in many other locations across east Antarctica, accounting for as much as half of the ice sheet's thickness in some locations.

Accounting for this hidden process is important to predicting future behavior of ice sheets in a generally warming global climate, the team concluded. Antarctica has at least 300 subglacial lakes.?

While Lake Vostok has been covered for millions of years, the water in the lake remains there for an average of about 13,000 years, Bell and colleagues found. Ice at the bottom of the sheet melts under pressure from the sheet's enormous weight, and the water flows into the lake. Meanwhile, some of the lake's water freezes to become part of the underside of the sheet.

For astrobiologists, Lake Vostok may also represent a rough case study of tradeoffs involved in using materials that might contaminate the environment you hope to sample.?The Russians reportedly have used an estimated 60 tons of antifreeze and lubricants to keep the drill shaft from freezing on its way to the lake. This raised concerns among some researchers and environmentalists that once the drill bit broke through the ice, the effort risked polluting the surrounding waters. US researchers had suggested using hot water to keep the drill from freezing, but their Russian counterparts noted that they didn't have the energy sources at such a remote site to do the job.

While researchers expected the drill to briefly come in contact with the lake water, they anticipated that the ice sheet's weight would immediately drive water back up the hole, forcing any contaminants back toward the surface.

Indeed, the research team noted that nearly 400 gallons of lubricants and coolant were flushed back into holding tanks when the breakthrough occurred, verifying that lake water had moved up into the shaft before it froze and corked the shaft.

US and British scientists have planned similar projects for lakes under the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Half The Battle With Business Financing Is Focus On Relevant ...

Business Financing

When it comes to business financing requirements, most business owners and managers do not have anywhere close to a full understanding of what?s available in the market.

The primary sources of business financing that are well branded via the banks are traditional forms of lending that provide lower risk rate for low risk deals, and only finance low risk deals. Any by definition provided by banks, low risk relates to a business balance sheet with a debt to equity level before and after new business financing is issued of 2:1 and a debt serving ratio of at least 1.20 (available cash flow must be 1.2 times the projected debt service).

But what if you?re business does not fall into these parameters? Are you out of luck, or do you keep knocking on similar doors to see if anyone will change their rules?

The reality is that conventional bank financing only provides about 1/3 of the required business financing that makes the economy go round.

The rest of the capital required comes from a number of different lending categories including the following three that I will briefly touch on.

Asset based lending as the name suggests focuses on leveraging the equity in assets that the business owns. There are many different slices to this market and a wide range of financing costs, call lending back to the amount of overall leverage the business is carrying and the inherent risk of loss to the lender.

For situations where there is a strong enough cash flow to cover off higher levels of leverage, there are investment banking and venture capital solutions.

Investment banking is another example of a business financing source that has many different variations, but for the most part this type of financing is placing other peoples money and providing a return on capital between 10% and 20% for the most part. This is accomplished by charging an interest rate on capital advanced as well as taking an equity stake in the business. Financing can be at or close to 100% of the capital required, depending on the deal. Approvals tend to be granted towards deals in specific industries and with well established and proven applicants or business teams.

Venture capital is a very common term in the business financing world, but tends to relate to a small percentage of cases where capital is required.

This largely due to the fact that venture capital is typically looking for a 30%+ return and are prepared to invest in growth industries that can be high risk but are also high potential for big returns. Because of the risk element associated with these types of deals, the majority of investments tend to fail, with the overall weighted return on capital being provided by a small percentage of deals that achieved their market potential.

There are many more examples of business financing sources out in the market place that may or may not be relevant to any particular situation.

The point here is that understanding where to look for money and what is relevant to your business requirements is going to be very important to locating and securing the capital you?re looking for.

And while even a blind squirrel can trip over an acorn every once in awhile, looking for capital strictly by trial and error is likely not going to be very successful, or can result in you paying far more for the capital you secure that you need to.

Germany hunts out deer calling champion (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Hunting enthusiasts grunted, bawled and bellowed in the battle to be named Germany's champion deer caller.

The 18 men and one woman used sea shells, ox horns and hollow plant stems to perfect their deer calls on Friday.

This year's winner, Tasso Wolzenburg, said he was impressed with the competition.

"Even if I were a real deer, I'd still have been amazed at today," he said.

Competitors were scored on their ability to imitate red deer calls during the breeding season in three different categories: a young deer, a dominant rutting buck, and an older deer.

The skill is part of a centuries-old tradition in Germany, and is used by hunters to lure the deer out of the forest and away from any rival hunters' guns.

The top three finalists in the German championship automatically secure their place to compete in the European championship.
